If the hostname is not set, gajim does not connect for some reason. The debug console is just spamming "(E) nbxmpp.stream ... unable to connect" without further info. receiving the configuration via dns is working from other clients for that host. how would i debug that? does gajim use the local dns to resolve the server info?

  3. cal0pteryx

ringo: reset your gtk themes to default. Looks like your system is forcing its broken gtk theme on gajim somehow.

  4. cal0pteryx

    > do you know how i can get rid of those disgusting thick borders? I don't have these. Check the official screenshot. That's what it's supposed to look like

  5. cal0pteryx

    https://gajim.org/img/screenshots/main-window.png

  6. cal0pteryx

vlad: make sure Gajim uses adwaita's standard theme. Then there is no border

  7. lovetox

    fee: start Gajim with -v

  8. lovetox

To get a more detailed debug log

  9. lovetox

And yes Gajim uses the system resolver

  10. lovetox

  13. mimi89999

Hello, I have a strange issue with Gajim spell check

  14. mimi89999

    https://upload.lebihan.pl:5281/file_share/068a4342-3f2e-7f1c-a716-9ff038ef89ee/Capture%20vid%C3%A9o%20du%202025-08-19%2010-20-02.mp4

  15. lovetox

Yes a known issue of the spell checking lib, it does not limit results and if there are too many it breaks

  16. lovetox

It should work if your screen has more space on the bottom

  17. lovetox

Or rather it's both, a Gtk issue, but they say don't put that many entries in a scrolled window

  18. cal0pteryx

    mimi89999: https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/issues/12259

  19. lovetox

I think we should report it to lib spell check also

  20. mimi89999

    > It should work if your screen has more space on the bottom I should get a bigger screen then 😀

  21. lovetox

    Totally your own fault

  22. cal0pteryx

    You're holding it wrong, obviously

  23. mimi89999

    > Yes a known issue of the spell checking lib, it does not limit results and if there are too many it breaks Sor whatever reason, there are all possible locales for a language

  24. cal0pteryx

That depends on which spell checking dicts you've installed on your system. Gajim logs all of them at startup

  25. chud

on fedora gwenview crashes when I try to open an image from gajim. if I try to open the folder, dolphin crashes too

  26. chud

    this is with gajim only

  27. lovetox

Then you should report that to the projects

  28. mimi89999

At least I managed to set it up by reducing the window

  29. mimi89999

    > I don't watch videos: if you can't explain in text, then it's pointless to even report a bug. 🤣

  30. cal0pteryx

    mimi89999: I linked a relevant issue in libspelling https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libspelling/-/issues/13

  31. lovetox

mimi89999: yeah I think he had a very bad day

  32. lovetox

But that interaction cost me also some emotuons

  33. lovetox

But that interaction cost me also some emotions

  34. mesonium

The gtk maintainers are pretty much overworked as any other maintainer. He just recently proposed in a presentation that he seeks to distribute the workload onto more shoulders, by transforming to a different governance type, for eg he thought of the Python Enhancement Proposals (PEP), Rusts RFCs or the Fedora Steering Comittee

  36. ringo

    > ringo: reset your gtk themes to default. Looks like your system is forcing its broken gtk theme on gajim somehow. I already tried that. Even to "default" it doesn't look normal. More like it's not themed at all. Worth noting that it's also the only app affected

  37. mesonium

for reference, here's the talk: www.youtube.com/watch?v=18Ir6RXkIeA&t=3378s The Day1 opening talk about the state of Gtk is likely worth watching too.

  38. cal0pteryx

ringo, this is most likely your system which either doesn't have all dependencies installed _or_ is misconfigured. I'm running Gajim just fine (Plasma 6.3). You can check GTK inspector, it lets you select different themes for Gajim. You could check if Adwaita-empty (the default) is available at all

  39. cal0pteryx

    thanks mesonium

  40. ringo

There has to be remnants of whatever the hell pywal did that I can't find because I deleted all of of the ~/.config/gtkrc* and let Plasma re-create them by changing the theme back and forth. Also tried with nwg-look. The whole system and other GTK apps follow along without issues but Gajim remains the same. I also tried emptying the ~/.local/share/gajim and ~/.config/gajim directories and the issue persists

  41. ringo

I have no idea where to look anymore.

  42. alexkurisu

ringo, create a new user and copy your configs one-by-one

  43. lovetox

alexkurisu: how do I make a app that can show message history when not connected to the server without syncing to a local database?

  44. lovetox

    Damn again wrong chat

  45. mesonium

lovetox: does this happen for you with Conversations always? :-P

  46. lovetox

    No

  47. vlad

    > vlad: make sure Gajim uses adwaita's standard theme. Then there is no border it only has default and dark in the config also i don't have rounded corners, no compositor

  48. Patrick

how does one completely uninstall gajim from windows 11? it was installed, uninstalled, now has a windows store version installed. i want to clean everything and install 2.3.4 fresh

  49. cal0pteryx

    Patrick: https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/wikis/help/Backup#windows

  50. lovetox

You use the uninstaller that is also installed

  51. lovetox

And check the paths on the backup wiki they need to be deleted

  52. Patrick

ok. she ran the uninstaller and deleted gajim folder from appdata

  53. mimi89999

Since the issue is also present in GNOME Text Editor, I reported it there https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-text-editor/-/issues/818

  54. mimi89999

    🤷‍♂️

  55. cal0pteryx

mimi89999: you could attach the gtk issue there as well, to spare devs the research ;)

  56. mimi89999

I fear that they will just close it then

  57. cal0pteryx

Sure, but what's your idea here? The problem is known and you let them search to close the issue afterwards?

  58. mimi89999

    I did tell them...

  59. cal0pteryx

    thanks :)

  63. debacle

I had two message losses with Gajim these days. One message was one-to-one, the other in a MUC. Both sent from Gajim 2.3.4. I see the messages locally, but they did not arrive on the other side. Different accounts of mine on different servers, both pretty current prosody. Has anybody else made the same experience?

  64. lovetox

    anything in the debug console?

  65. debacle

The error message above is from my editor, not from Gajim.

  66. debacle retracted a previous message, but it's unsupported by your client.

  67. debacle

*Many* lines. But when I tried to copy them into my editor, so that I can search, Gajim hanged. ``` gui-get-selection: (error "Timed out waiting for property-notify event") Timed out waiting for reply from selection owner ``` (Error message from my editor, not from Gajim.) Had to hard kill Gajim, no other way. Now the debug log is gone :-(

  68. debacle

*Many* lines. But when trying to copy them into my editor, so that I can search, Gajim hangs. ``` gui-get-selection: (error "Timed out waiting for property-notify event") Timed out waiting for reply from selection owner ``` (Sent from Dino, as long as Gajim is unresponsive, showing only a black square.)

  69. debacle retracted a previous message, but it's unsupported by your client.

  70. debacle

There is no "Save to file" option in the debug log, right? Copy/paste seems to have a size limit.

lovetox pushed 1 commits to branch gajim/master feat: Add Shortcuts Manager - https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/commit/9480cacf603d47551672831262ba5b74cc744ec0

  72. lovetox

debacle, sounds like deeper problems in the system somwhere

  73. debacle

There are a couple of (minor) problems since GTK4. Maybe sth. with "portals"?

  74. debacle

E.g. when I paste text (right click for context menu, paste) at the end of a word, the text is pasted one character to the left, leaving the last character of the word to the right of the pasted text.

  75. debacle

When I select text in the input field, the selection goes away on right mouse click, so I can't use cut or copy from the context menu.

  76. debacle

This does not happen with text in the conversation, i.e. text already sent.

  77. lovetox

    > When I select text in the input field, the selection goes away on right mouse click, so I can't use cut or copy from the context menu. yes this is a bug we introduced because of another workaround

  78. bot

lovetox pushed 1 commits to branch gajim/master fix: MessageInput: Don’t remove selection on right click - https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/commit/42806117cd1f0d41516c9dd8adc636d5d492700f

  79. lovetox

    > E.g. when I paste text (right click for context menu, paste) at the end of a word, the text is pasted one character to the left, leaving the last character of the word to the right of the pasted text. we place the cursor on click under the mouse, so if you click at the end of a word to place the cursor and then right click, it seems you need to be very exact, then it works, if you move your mouse before click a bit to the left, then it registers the mouse over one position to the left and places the cursor there

  80. lovetox

its a tradeoff sadly, we need to place the cursor where you right click, because the spell check lib will suggest word for where the cursor is

  81. lovetox

    https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libspelling/-/issues/5

  82. lovetox

i have to say the switch to libspelling was a downgrade
