Does anyone know of a service similar to JMP?

  3. eliza

Can provide virtual numbers to send SMS

  5. cpp

Hi, I haven't used gajim in like a decade and I just can't find the button to open my roster. Sorry for this really stupid question. Can someone point me to what i need to do to open the roster?

  6. lovetox

Red button in the middle, start chat

  7. lovetox

Sorry might be another color on your system

  8. lovetox

    Depends on your system

  9. cpp

Ah, thanks! There appears to be no possiblitiy to show them in a way so that contacts and chats grouped by the group they grouped in.

  10. cpp

My memories may be off but in my memories contacts used to be shown in collabsible groups in the roster.

  11. lovetox

You can use the filter to filter for a specific group

  12. lovetox

But the dialog is meant to find contacts to start a chat with

  13. lovetox

If you want to organize chats you can use the pinning functionality and add multiple workspaces in the sidebar

  14. cpp

I found a screenshot of how it used to be https://workpress.plattform32.de/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/gajim-rooster-top.png I basically don't want my collegues to be listed mixed with people i know from some open source project/free time/you name it. But I want them all to show on the same list, collapsable. I can't seem to reproduce the old behavior

  15. lovetox

Either you use the group filter in start chat or you sort your chats into different workspaces

  16. cpp

    dang

  17. cpp

    thanks

  18. lovetox

Seems to me you should try to create workspaces

  19. cpp

I mean, i already have them grouped and other clients use the groups. I need to manually recreate a work space for each group if i want to use gajim?

  20. lovetox

No you can use gajim just fine without

  21. lovetox

You need to do it if you want that specific GUI you have in mind

  22. cpp

Is there a fork or something that'd give me the old UX?

  23. lovetox

    https://gajim.org/downloads/

  24. lovetox

I think Gajim 1.3 is the last version with that gui

  25. cpp

    Is 1.3.x still maintained?

  26. cpp

Is my user expectation that exotic? It's the user experience i learned from all IM clients at least since icq

  27. lovetox

No many people coming from ICQ have this expectations. But with Smartphones the GUI of many clients evolved to focus on the chat list.

  28. lovetox

Also your idea works only for small contact lists, which probably was no problem in ICQ days

  29. cpp

On my smartphone I wouldn't want a roster. But on my laptop I do. Screens nowadays are so huge, i could have like 100 contacts in a XEP-0083 tree view on a 4k screen. Why would I abandon the idea of a tree view in the moment i can finally use it with large rosters

  30. lovetox

That's not how it works. You would need to show why a long tree view is a better GUI for all cases.

  31. cpp

The contact tree used to be collapsable, no?

  32. cpp

If I have a debian question at work I might want to at the same time see the "debian" group and the "collegues" group. In a tree view i could collapse all other groups

  33. lovetox

Why do you need to see a group?

  34. lovetox

Normally you want to chat with someone then you type the first few letters and the chat pops up. Or it's an important contact and you click on your pinned contact

  35. cpp

My user Story: I have a question regarding debian at work. I want to think about whom of my contacts that is online right now i should write a message. I open my messenger and look at the list of my collegues and the list of ppl from the debian project. I click on the contact that fit's my needs and write them a message.

  36. lovetox

You go to start chat, click on the group filter , select Debian, and choose your contact

  37. cpp

But that way i won't see that collegue who told me that he packaged a python library for debian.

  38. lovetox

? You described how to find a person in a group and I told you

  39. cpp

But if I'd see them as a tree view I can just expand multiple groups I deem relevant.

  40. lovetox

What has this to do with another person

  41. lovetox

To do what? Look at people in a group?

  42. lovetox

    The goal is chatting or?

  43. cpp

A lot of times i don't know which person i want to write before hand. And I want to look at my contacts to see who might be a candidate

  44. cpp

When I see my contacts as a tree i'll remember "that collegue once told me he packaged a game for debian" or "That debian guy told me he's doing frelance consulting".

  45. lovetox

What has the tree to do with it?

  46. cpp

In a tree view I can expand the group "debian" and the group "collegues" at the same time and screen for the right contact

  47. cpp

Sorry for bothering you with that. I understand that this feature was dropped in Gajim. Thanks for your help.

  48. lovetox

Ok yes if that's your need to look at two groups at the same time it is hard to do with a list

  49. lovetox

No worries, we have a few users who I had the debate with, but still not sure if it just a "I want it because I always did it like that" or a actual problem in daily use

  50. lovetox

Because as you said yourself you have other devices where you have no problem with it

  51. cpp

I tend to use my phone differently then a laptop or desktop. On the phone I'll respond to messages or send messages to a specific person. A phone has a small screen and no keyboard, a tree view is impractical on a phone. I don't see why you'd implement a desktop software like a mobile software.

  52. cpp

If I'm not the only one who has this requirement: If i were to implement a tree view and create a PR, is there a chance it'll be merged?

  53. lovetox

no, for a feature to be merged i need to be convinced that it is useful to a lot of users, the case you described seems contrived to me, i dont think this happens often enough to tailor the UX to it.

  54. alexkurisu

    > I don't see why you'd implement a desktop software like a mobile software. That's GNOME way of doing things for ya

  55. lovetox

there are 2 things to consider in my opinion, 1. for what screen size a software is designed, currently we design for desktop, Gajim is very hard to use on a mobile, if at all. 2. Is the process/UX you go through to do basic things in a chat software, i would argue they should not differ greatly, i dont see why i would have a different process to start a chat or finde a contact on mobile vs desktop

Is there a way to remove the titlebar in the latest git release?

  57. lovetox

no, but we consider a setting for that, do you use a tiling wm?

  58. lovetox

are you aware that if you would remove the headerbar, that you would not be able to move the window anymore with the mouse?

  59. Nyx [ep.im]

    > no, but we consider a setting for that, do you use a tiling wm? yes

  60. magikh

    > are you aware that if you would remove the headerbar, that you would not be able to move the window anymore with the mouse? On my desktop environment (Cinnamon) I can move with super + drag-and-drop so the title bar is not necessary even on non tiling window managers

    👍 1

    > Ok yes if that's your need to look at two groups at the same time it is hard to do with a list Simply havin a multi-select for roster groups would do it, no?

  62. Codimp

    > are you aware that if you would remove the headerbar, that you would not be able to move the window anymore with the mouse? on most tilling wm you can move a windows by holding any place of the window

  63. lovetox

cal0pteryx: yes but I don't think this exists as default widget

the new omemo button to set trust is cool, but is it normal that there is no color?
