AFAIK, if message B contains a reply to message A with XEP-0461 support, it essentially contains both an ID for message A, and a (fallback) textual representation of its content for clients without XEP-0461 support (in the main body itself); Gajim, having support for XEP-0461, will always try to message ID pointed to, and display a generic fallback message if the original message isn't available -- it won't use the fallback content present in the message body. ↺

deuill: I don't think lovetox plans to ever use the fallback text as it is just discarded upon reception (to avoid storing useless stuff I guess?). however, what may happen at some point, is that gajim attempts to fetch a referenced message from MAM if it does not know about it, which it does not do right now. that won't work for the case where slidge-whatsapp does not know the message at all though ;)

FWIW I've had this happen on normal XMPP MUCs, where I guess some message has fallen out of MAM or something, but yeah it also happens in things like slidge-whatsapp. ↺
