Click the icon in the row of the fingerprint

Well, I could verify Gajim device in Conversations. But I don't know how to verify Conversations in Gajim. Thanks

    > Well, I could verify Gajim device in Conversations. But I don't know how to verify Conversations in Gajim. Thanks coins, if I recall correctly, you need to do it manually, by comparing the two fingerprints (display the Conversations one and, as you were told, check within/from Gajim that the characters are the same). Maybe you are expecting some QR code scanning. 🤔 That's not how it works in Gajim as far as I know.

Is Gajim in the windows store still und updated. I am asking because it is still 1.9.3 (vs. 1.9.5l. https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pggf6hd43f9?launch=true&mode=mini&hl=de-DE&gl=DE

Axel R.: it will be updated once some issues get fixed. This concerns some dependencies Gajim needs on Windows

My friend group is in the process of moving off of Discord, and I'm trying to make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved. I have some quick questions. - Is it possible to make GIFs autoplay in chats? I've seen older posts online implying that Gajin can do this, but it's not working for me in Gajim 2.1.1 on Linux (just a static image). This seems trivial, but some members of my friend group really like using GIFs for communication - Does Gajim currently support voice and video calls? I've seen that it does, but I can't see any functionality in the client. Might this be a limitation of my server? What about conference calls? - Do I understand correctly that it is impossible to decrypt old messages on a new device? (e.g. if I started an encrypted conversation before syncing my phone)

To the last two questions: - I have not tried voice/video calls in Gajim, but conference calls are not supported in XMPP. - Yes, it is impossible to decrypt old messages on a new device, since the keys needed to decrypt them are not present on the new device.

  12. Aaron

Thank you! Ah, interesting about the conference calls. I believe I saw that some clients can, they must be using some other protocol/service to do it, I guess

    > - Yes, it is impossible to decrypt old messages on a new device, since the keys needed to decrypt them are not present on the new device. This is only true is you're using Omemo E2EE, which is disabled by default. You can make it the default in the Gajim settings

    > Thank you! > Ah, interesting about the conference calls. I believe I saw that some clients can, they must be using some other protocol/service to do it, I guess Some other clients (Dino, Movim, Libervia) can But the conference calls don't scale well (yet) since they're currently peer to peer (n 1-1 audio calls)

  15. Aaron

Thanks! Yes, sorry, I meant messages that were deliberately encrypted previously. I choose OMEMO over PGP for reasons I can't recall right now, haha

  17. lissine

Omemo is easier to use, but it has PFS, which means you can't decrypt old messages on a new device

  18. Aaron

Ahh, I see. The calls would only be for 3-4 people, but I can still see that being an issue

  19. lissine

And Gajim doesn't support calls right now, neither 1-1, nor group calls

  20. Aaron

    > Omemo is easier to use, but it has PFS, which means you can't decrypt old messages on a new device Thanks! That was the understanding I came to, but I've been known to be wrong occasionally, haha

  21. Aaron

    > And Gajim doesn't support calls right now, neither 1-1, nor group calls Good to know! Maybe I can come up with some alternative for the ~1 time a week I actually use the feature

  22. lissine

You could host jitsi / use jitsi meet

  23. Aaron

That's the name I've seen floated around, but I haven't really looked into it yet. Thanks for the tip.

  24. Aaron

I like the idea of self-hosting, but I don't really want to be the sole friend with access to everyone's metadata

  25. Aaron

I assume it would at least be possible to see who's talking to who and when

  26. alfalfascout

You can't decrypt messages on a new device? If it's a PC, couldn't you just copy over the chat logs from the old one?

  27. lovetox

    thats not decrypting, thats copying

  28. lovetox

of course you can do that, if you are lucky that your new device can run the exact same version of a client you had before

Yeah, it's a bit of a pain, but it's not really an issue for me personally. I can see it being a problem in niche circumstances, like if I were travelling, my phone broke, and I wanted to access my messages on a new device

I can see it being a problem in niche circumstances, like if I were travelling, my phone broke, and I wanted to access my messages on a new device -- actually, that scenario would be a problem with any encryption anyway. I guess it's really just a convenience thing, easy access to old conversations that are still on the server

  31. lissine

You could backup your chat history regularly

  32. Aaron

Yeah, totally. I think we've all been trained to overvalue convenience, personally, haha

  33. Aaron

I mostly think about these things defensively, so I'm ready to offer solutions to people who are used to exactly what Discord provides

  34. Aaron

Ah, found the answer to my GIF question, looks like the answer is no as of 5 months ago https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/merge_requests/990
