  1. aereaux

Is there a way to force connecting via websocket via the account connection settings?

  2. moparisthebest

Yes, or there used to be... Been a long time since I used it, try putting wss:// in host or something

  3. aereaux

That was it, turns out I also needed to set it to direct tls!

  4. alfalfascout

Is it possible to block/mute someone in a group chat on Gajim?

  5. lovetox

    alfalfascout: no

  6. alfalfascout

    Thank you for the information.

  7. lovetox

alfalfascout: how would you expect this to look in the chat?

  8. lovetox

Not seeing the messages at all?

  9. lovetox

Or some indication that a blocked contact wrote a message?

  10. alfalfascout

I think some indication that a blocked contact wrote a message might be better, so that it doesn't look like other people in the chat are responding to thin air.

    > I think some indication that a blocked contact wrote a message might be better, so that it doesn't look like other people in the chat are responding to thin air. 💯

  12. lovetox

I think it would be then something like how now moderated messages look?

  13. toastal

    > I think some indication that a blocked contact wrote a message might be better, so that it doesn't look like other people in the chat are responding to thin air. 👍

  14. alfalfascout

    > like how now moderated messages look? Yes. Pardon the late reply.

  15. wolfgang

    > Just letting you know that lot of fediverse instances are about to defederate from fosstodon.org (because a mod seems to do really bad things, like supporting deportation): Gajim account is on fosstodon.org, so maybe the "do we need to move?" is a question today ^^ But isn't the whole point of the fediverse is that it's free from pointless censorship?

  16. opinionplatform.org 6

No. It's the censorship is determined by distributed operators, following the wind chaotically.

  17. opinionplatform.org 6

Instead of a professional organization deciding based on their view of what their users want, you have random self-appointed narrow minded dweebs deciding. :)

  18. voker57

some people just want to be the censor

  19. alfalfascout

I thought the point of the fediverse was that if you don't like the management, you can find a different/start your own instance and still stay in touch with friends through the shared protocol

  20. voker57

except if you try to federate with a wrongthinker you will also be defederated

  21. alfalfascout

    Huh?

  22. Kris

alfalfascout, you are correct. It is very hard to get defederated on your own instance unless you are a total asshole, which seems to be a barrier some people here fail to pass.

  23. voker57

    > Huh? if you set up your own instance and try to read both sides, you will be defederated. it's a common practice to defederate because 'federates with X'

  24. Kris

    complete non-sense

  25. alfalfascout

I hadn't heard of defederation before. How does that work? I'm thinking of, like, email for instance, where I could be on proton and still send emails to gmail addresses, and I have trouble imagining being barred from sending or receiving emails.

  26. Kris

the same happens with email, it's basically like a spam filter

  27. Kris

    server side

  28. alfalfascout

So, if you read a spam email, your emails get marked as spam? I'm not sure I understand what it means to 'read both sides'.

  29. Kris

no, it is the server admins noticing that an email server sends a lot of abuse email and then denylists that server so that users don't get the spam.

  30. alfalfascout

So, this reading both sides example is about a different type of connection?

  31. Kris

no this is right-wing group think non-sense. nothing technical

  32. alfalfascout

Thank you for explaining. I was confused by the terminology that I was unfamiliar with.

  33. Kris

it refers to that these block lists are often public and some server admins look at the lists of other servers and decide if they want to recieve messages from these based on that. But it is quite rare and if you are running your own instance it is basically unheared of that someone bothers with that.

  34. voker57

    > So, this reading both sides example is about a different type of connection? if you are known to receive or send email to a bad server you will get defederated

  35. voker57

    https://fba.ryona.agency/?reason=federates+with

  36. Kris

please don't link to that Kiwifarms run website

  37. Kris

that is mainly used to do ban evasion

  38. voker57

see, Kris here is already jumping at chance to defederate me for possibly linking to a server that might be related to a bad server

  39. voker57

    typical mastodon admin behavior

  40. Kris

    lol

  41. lovetox

ok i think thats enough for today, please stop this discussion

maybe a silly question but why does Gajim export a user's roster in CSV instead of uh............ XML

  43. lovetox

because a user can load a csv into excel and view it

  44. lovetox

because a user can load a csv into excel and view it and easily edit it

  47. mike

Hey quick question, under the privacy section of the modify account menu option there is a switch for "Media Playback" Does anyone here know how Gajim looks for media that is playing? When using VLC as my player and MATE as my desktop environment I never see any media either in my status or under my resources inside chats. Both new to hosting an xmpp server and using clients so I want to mess around with all the features and learn stuff :D

  48. lovetox

    it is in the description

  49. lovetox

does only work if your player publishes the info via MPRIS

  50. lovetox

but i dont know of any client who would show this info then

  51. lovetox

including Gajim, im myself not sure where we dispaly this info, if at all

  52. nigel

Do browsers? _quietly closes private tabs_

  53. mike

Some clients I've seen let you set your status to the song title on every title change, I am more than capable of scripting something together to do this for me, I was just wondering if it was done for me already and just missing it by not looking hard enough. Thanks

  54. Goot the ticklegoblin!

could it be in the user's pubsub personal eventing storage whatever it's called

  55. wolfgang

    > except if you try to federate with a wrongthinker you will also be defederated That's why I don't even try with the fediverse. I do use PeerTube and I scape bsky for art.

  56. wolfgang

    Scrape*

  57. wolfgang

    > please don't link to that Kiwifarms run website Josh (Null) is too stretch thin atm to host any website besides the main forum.
