Gajim - 2025-03-14

Hi. I have not tried the last version yet so I don't know if something has changed, but I don't use the list in start chat because you can't look for someone in a certain group (someone you don't remember exactly their name/nick). For this I need to use the contact list. I hope this is still possible in the latest version.

Groups are shown now in start chat and you have a group drop-down where you can filter for groups

> What makes the one list worse than the other list I need to dig more into the new interface, and continue using an older version to compare. Perhaps the same thing can be found, but my immediate perception is that the old account icons were convenient to have a list of contacts per account in one click, while now you need to click the plus, then click on start a conversation, then realise there is a filtering icon on the right, click on it, click on account to see the list, then click on the account. So 5 clicks on 4 different things instead of just one before.

I am probably missing something but I can't find how to see a contact details or to remove a contact.

Besides, there is something strange on the filtering by group: I only see two groups, on which is the name of my first workspace and the second is "General", then selecting one of the two to filter seems not to have any effect.

You can assign a contact to a group in advanced - manage contact list

Maybe you don't have any contacts assigned to groups

But I hear you that it takes now more clicks to get to the contact list, we will think about how to improve that

By the way, when I do "start a new discussion", in the list of contacts, for each account, I have one item "Start a new conversation", and clicking on it has no effect at all. If I filter by account, I still have one such item for each account that are filtered out. The sorting of contacts seem to be alphabetical but all contacts with capitals first, then contacts with lower case, and the "Start a new conversation" items seem to be listed after n abd before p lower case.

avron, the "Start a new conversation" had also confused me for while and I think it the UX could be improved: It's meant to start a new conversations with someone, who isn't in your contact list, but whose address you've entered into the search field. ✏

We should probably have _one_ item for that, but then we'd need a follow up "which account" dialog

Also the input field saying "Search..." does not quiet fit to the "Start New Chat" buttons

I mean in theory a client can discover this because we request information

But I never saw a client implement such a feature

Ok, as long as the contact does not get a message that I am trying to reach them, this is fine.

Is it an issue that the "Mute Sounds" option (in the tray menu) starts out in a ticked position every time I start Gajim? Unticking this option disables sounds in Gajim preferences, it seems.

But in practice if you type a new address, only the "Start new chat" will be displayed in the search results. So it's not that much of an issue. ✏ ↺

Also note that it starts a chat without adding the address as a contact. There's a separate menu entry for adding a contact (after clicking the + button)

lovetox, is this option supposed to disable sounds in Gajim preferences in general? Also can someone try mentioning me to check if I have the sounds enabled or not when this option is ticked please

Well ok, seems like when this option is ticked at startup, I still get the sounds. Perhaps it's a bug with the DE rather than Gajim

yes it is supposed to toggle the preference setting "Play Sounds"

oh we initialise it with the opposite value :/

Yo ngl, I feel like the fool here, but I have been messing with XEP-0258 and have it enabled on my test server and I can see that gajim sees the featured enabled via server info. I just can't figure out how to select a label for a message or where to find it on the UI.

it normally shows up as dropdown right beside the message input, on the right

but simply enabling on the server might be not enough

you need to configure some labels on the server, and probably where they are available

for example in a group chat

hmm this is 1.7.3

All of you are the bomb. Finding that options under the account settings was somewhat difficult but I reset the sec labels on the server to the module's default and it works great
