Lightning Bjornsson (they, he, xe/hir), actually I don't mind them, they're not too big

?OTRv23? has requested an Off-the-Record private conversation <https://otr.cypherpunks.ca/>. However, you do not have a plugin to support that. If you are using Pidgin in Debian or Ubuntu, install the pidgin-otr package. See https://otr.cypherpunks.ca/ for more information.

Who knows what this is about? My friend sent it to me, but I don't understand what it means

ccgoodshop, OTR is an encryption mechanism for IM, it was used before OMEMO and has some limitations (no offline messages support). Ask your friend to use OMEMO or OpenPGP instead.✎ -

What IM client your friend is using?

ccgoodshop
I don't know what software he's using.

If he is sharing that info go to contact details and check, or ask.

Is it possible that he shared pictures or videos with me because we use different chat tools, so I can't check them?

andy
ccgoodshop: > Is it possible that he shared pictures or videos with me because we use different chat tools, so I can't check them? XMPP is a protocol, so yeah two people can chat using different clients on different platforms and using different servers. Ask him what kind of IM client he is using.

ccgoodshop
I don't know what kind of protocol he used, usually our dialogue is very smooth, but today suddenly he sent me the above message, I don't know what happened, so here to ask you gods for advice!

lissine
ccgoodshop: just ask your friend what software he used to send you the message
-
ccgoodshop
If he uses a different software to send me a message, does that mean I can't receive it
-
lissine
ccgoodshop: You can receive it.
-
lissine
In fact, you did receive the message. It was just encrypted with an old encryption method that Gajim doesn't support anymore
-
ccgoodshop
But I didn't get anything?

andy
ccgoodshop: > If he uses a different software to send me a message, does that mean I can't receive it In XMPP no. As I said before XMPP is only a language for programs. If two different programs can talk with, they are using the same protocol/language.✎ -

I can receive his messages normally, this does not affect me?

So he sends me an encrypted message using a different protocol, and I can receive the message, but I can't decrypt any of the messages he sends, right?
-
lissine
ccgoodshop: you can if he uses the more widely-available encryption method: OMEMO
-
lissine
OMEMO is supported by almost all xmpp clients.

What other software can I use to log in my jabber account besides MPP.JP? Maybe I need to try some other chat software
-
andy
ccgoodshop: > So he sends me an encrypted message using a different protocol, and I can receive the message, but I can't decrypt any of the messages he sends, right? Not a different protocol but encryption method called OTR. OTR is not used anymore because it's not fit to modern IM.

Gajim freezes but not my system. Still the system gets a high load. If I click multiple times on one image-icon (as nothing happens at first), each click will open the image, ending with mulitple windows of same image. I use Voidlinux with Gnome+Wayland and Gajim 1.9.3.

goran, could you like to try the flatpak to see if your issue appears there too? Do you see anything in the debug log, when it happens? Start it with the verbose parameter: `gajim -v` or `gajim -l gajim=CRITICAL,gajim.c.preview=DEBUG` could be sufficient. Do you think you could try to debug or at least profile it, to get a guess, where it hangs?✎ -

meson, I startet with 'gajim -l gajim=CRITICAL,gajim.c.preview=DEBUG'. The next time it hangs, I will post the output.

unassailable, Menu: Gajim -> Preferences -> Chats -> File Preview You may not want to enable automatic file preview in public channels as you can't be absolute certain to not receive spam.

I'm guessing the privacy issue is that you reveal your IP address to the file server when your client downloads it, if I'm not mistake on how this works ↺
