Gajim - 2024-07-26

Good morning friendly folks of Gajim. Got a little issue as a total noob user :) Downloaded Gajim as flatpak for my MX Linux. I'm logged in via it right now. How do I set the OMEMO encryption so that I can see and write to my contects I got on my phone app (Conversations) already? As my own, and their messages are "encrypted by omemo but not for THIS device"

you need to verify or approve omemo fingerprints of your gajim device on your conversations app.

your contact needs to do the same: verify or approve omemo fingerprints of your gajim device in their client.

messages received after this was done should be visible in your gajim device

*after this* So there ain't a way to "unlock" the previous messages within my gajim? Not really an issue, just a bit of inconvenient. However from a safety point of view very reasonable

Hi, is it possible that Gajim doesn't keep the cleartext of outgoing OMEMO messages somehow? I opened the client this morning to see this:

They registered as "not encrypted" so I'm guessing that's just the falllback body message that got pulled from the message archive

Incoming messages were there just fine (with the little "encrypted" half shield icon) ✏

lovetox, They were all visible in Gajim, and still are visible in Siskin on my phone. Gajim seems to somehow have lost the cleartext after sending them

Weird, I just quit and re-opened Gajim and the messages I sent this mornign are still there... Can't think of what might've happened ✏

Full reboot, messages from this morning still there... Ok. Not reproducible, I guess I'll just try to pay attention if it happens again?

They're all listed as "not encrypted", as if all the OMEMO bits have been discarded. It's not a decryption failure

lovetox, I'm fucking stupid... It was on another device; I just happen to use the exact same desktop environment with the exact same theme and exact same Gajim client.

It's specifically this that I saw, with the "not encrypted" thing. But yeah, it just needs slightly better error messaging perhaps (and smarter users maybe...)

That reminds me. What's up with the file picker for avatars having a filter set to only show either png, jpeg, or svg? Is this set by gajim or is it just a flatpak portal thing?
