Gajim - 2024-07-25

  1. Jim

Newby here. Auditioning both Gajim and Dino on Linux machine... to replace Signal. Initial thoughts on Gajim and a question. Love the ability to delete old messages in Gajim and that will probably carry the day. But the high chroma color pallat is a bit much. Any way to tone that down?

  2. fjklp

Jim: What are you referring wo with "delete old messages"?

  3. fjklp

Gajim does support custom gtk3 themes

  4. fjklp

it will follow the theme set on your system for gtk3

  5. fjklp

if you use flatpak, you will have to do a bit more

  6. Jim

Thanks for quick response. Points me in a direction.

  7. fjklp

I only know linux at present. I really ought to run gajim in windows some so I can answer common questions. Are you linux or windows?

  8. Jim

Linux only... moved from Mac a couple years ago.

  9. fjklp

Regarding the deleting of messages, I just wanted to make sure that gajim doesn't have message retraction. 'Delete locally' will only delete the message from your gajim instance.

  11. fjklp

Ok. For me, on gnome, I can just run gnome-tweaks to set a custom theme. It's under Appearance > Legacy Applications in gnome-tweaks.

  12. Jim

Understand the local part... but some benefit just to remove the visual clutter. But one can also clear history for individual contacts.

  13. fjklp

Also, Gajim > Preferences > Style allows you to select dark theme if your system has one. You can also customize some colors there in gajim.

  14. Jim

By the way, I'ver gravitated to Fedora.

  15. fjklp

I'm on ubuntu but fedora is kind of tempting with the good package freshness. Might try it eventually.

  16. fjklp

I find it interested that you are looking to replace Signal with xmpp. What makes you go with xmpp?

  17. fjklp

I find it interesting that you are looking to replace Signal with xmpp. What makes you go with xmpp?

  18. ong

Signal is not a replacement for XMPP.

  19. ong

XMPP is too extensible to even be related to signal at all.

  20. ong

Signal does not guarantee message transport security.

  21. Jim

fjkip... to Fedora from Mint. Fedora has ben stable and has layout similar ro Mac from whence I came. XMPP has always been in the back of my mind but I thought it was a bit much for to ask of friends an family. (They tolerate my security bent.) Signal was something they could swallow... initially. Now I can move them to XMPP. Why XMPP... security.

  22. Jim

ONG... 1) Not replacing XMPP with Signal. Rather, the other way around. 2) They are related in that they are both communication tools. One is more palitable (to those who humor me); the other is "more better" with security. 3) It's a progression of steady improvement (without losing friends) 4) I didn't say they were equivalent.

  23. epic

I also switched my old laptop from Mint to Fedora. Fedora is awesome & really stable! Main desktop runs arch (btw)

  24. Polarian

you are aware OMEMO was based off signal right?

  25. epic

Only really dislike gnome and its clunkiness

  26. Polarian

    > I also switched my old laptop from Mint to Fedora. Fedora is awesome & really stable! Main desktop runs arch (btw) gajim on fedora is painful

  27. Polarian

    you got to flatpak it

  28. Polarian

    or so I heard

  29. epic

    Meh don't feel like flatpakking

  30. amogus

    compile it

  31. epic 's laptop explodes

  32. amogus

    use 1 or 2 cores

  33. epic

I was trying to actually get it on my mac today, but didn't finish in succeeding due to some errors idk

  34. epic

wasnt really focussed so I just quit it and called it a day

  35. hannibal

    > Good news: seems like the drag drop problem with Gajim flatpak is a reported plasma issue after all. meson: could you share a link?

  36. AtulRaj

I am facing issue with Gajim in Windows. It is not starting, I was able to setup account but the app is having issue starting up. Please help

  37. fjklp

I think this is the problem recently discovered for windows

  38. fjklp

    > You can find Windows Store Apps in the hidden folder > `C:/Program Files/WindowsApps/` this

  39. fjklp

    > Fun fact, when I copy the gajim folder there to eg the desktop (for permissions issues) and try to start Gajim then, it works. Can confirm that it doesn't start from the Windows 10 Store and this

  40. fjklp

AtulRaj: is it from the microsoft store?

  41. AtulRaj

    Yes it was

  42. AtulRaj

    then I tried .exe too

  43. lovetox

    The version from our website?

  44. lovetox

There should be a debug exe in the install folder try launching that

  45. lovetox

    And send the output

  46. lovetox

Or try launching gajims from the terminal

  47. AtulRaj

    Okay thanks will send it

  48. cal0pteryx

Starting Gajim from either bin/gajim-debug.exe or bin/gajim.exe works just fine. only clicking the system's Gajim shortcut doesn't seem to work

  49. lovetox

? But we did not change anything there

  50. m

    Hello there :)

  51. m

Thanks for Gajim, it's quite nice !

  52. cal0pteryx

Windows event log sadly doesn't help.

  53. cal0pteryx

    m: thanks

    > Windows event log sadly doesn't help. Haven't seen anything there too yesterday. Has anyone checked if any other app is affected and if people started ranting on the web already?

  56. lissine

Hi If I want to search using `from:nick` and the nick contains spaces, how do I escape them?

  57. meson

  58. leke

I have encountered a bug in the app that affects the text display. When the text exceeds the display frame, it does not wrap automatically, causing it to be cut off and unreadable.

  60. leke

The reason seems to be that excessively long URLs do not automatically wrap

  61. leke

  62. leke

And it affected all the messages

  63. cal0pteryx

leke, leke: that's a known issue, a GTK bug

  64. leke

    ok

  65. goblinking

Gah! I hate Windows! I'm trying to fix Gajim for a relative, and it refuses to open.

  66. goblinking

What was the last version of Gajim that was NOT installed from the M$ store?

  67. lissine

goblinking: you can install the latest Gajim from both the MS store and the Gajim website

  68. goblinking

Doesn't it just link to the store?

  69. goblinking

I'm looking at the homepage on Linux, and then I click "Other Platforms," and now I can see Gajim Portable - that it?

  70. lissine

No. Also, see: > Fun fact, when I copy the gajim folder there to eg the desktop (for permissions issues) and try to start Gajim then, it works. Can confirm that it doesn't start from the Windows 10 Store > > How odd

  71. goblinking

    Yes, they're using Windows 10.

  72. lissine

goblinking: if you open the website from windows it'll

  73. lissine

goblinking: download Gajim or download Gajim portable. Both are exe installs

  74. goblinking

Where's the rest of the thread you linked? I'm not sure how to follow it with Dino.

  75. goblinking

I copy what folder to where?

  76. lissine

    > You can find Windows Store Apps in the hidden folder > `C:/Program Files/WindowsApps/`

  77. goblinking

Ah, yeah, I found that earlier. Tried running it from the command prompt, passing -v and whatnot, still never opened.

  78. goblinking

So, some permissions problem? Someone didn't get some app manifest right? Is there an issue opened already?

  79. lissine

    The problem is known

  80. lissine

    The issue is known

  81. goblinking

Is there a way to export / convert chat history etc, in case I would want to switch to some other software?

  82. goblinking

Ah, wait - Gajim is the only Windows XMPP client with OMEMO support.

  83. goblinking

Does the MS Store allow you to install a previous version? Like, 1.9.1?

  84. lovetox

    I doubt it

  85. goblinking

So, what's a good course of action? Uninstall MS Store version, install regular .exe, keep it that way?

  86. lovetox

if you need it working immediately, yes

  87. lovetox

    or no

  88. lovetox

you dont actually need to unstinstall ms store

  89. lovetox

leave it, and install portable exe for now as workaround

  90. lovetox

user can normally chat, and we hope in a few days ms store will work again, then you install ms store update and deinstall portable

  91. goblinking

Well, considering I already uninstalled and reinstall the MS Store version today, I just uninstalled it again and now it's working, finally.

  92. cal0pteryx

How'd you reinstall from the store? It's not available at the moment, is it?

  93. meson

lovetox: do you know what the issue was?

  94. lovetox

no, im not sure there is an issue

  95. lovetox

    > Starting Gajim from either bin/gajim-debug.exe or bin/gajim.exe works just fine. only clicking the system's Gajim shortcut doesn't seem to work i can not confirm this, just installed both exe files, and everything worked normally

  96. lovetox

my ms store is somehow broken, i will try tomorrow to install it via msstore

  97. lovetox

but if reinstall fixed the problem, i think that at least a doable workaround

  98. meson

Yeah I could not start when I installed it with the MS store. Otherwise it worked fine

  99. lovetox

and did you try to reinstall?

  100. lovetox

actually i dont know if uninstalling deletes the user data on the ms store version

  101. meson

    No, I didn't.

  102. lovetox

so it just doesnt work now? or what was you solution

  103. meson

For me it doesn't work atm, my solution was to find the hidden installation folder, change it's permission so that I can access it, copied it to the destkop and started Gajim from there

  104. meson

my solution was to find the hidden installation folder, change it's permission so that I can access it, copied it to the destkop and started Gajim from there

  105. meson

my solution was to find the hidden installation folder, change its permission so that I can access it, copied it to the destkop and started Gajim from there

  106. meson

So to me it feels like the linking to gajim.exe is maybe broken

  107. lovetox

so its not actually the app that has a problem ..

  108. cal0pteryx

lovetox, by bin/gajim.exe (and gajim-debug.exe) I meant both .exe files from the MS Store

  109. lovetox

    ah ok

  110. lovetox

my store works now but no time to debug today

  111. cal0pteryx

    ok, will try tomorrow

  112. cal0pteryx

when I checked the folder, I had two folders containing "gajim" + garbled id stuff. I think this used to be one. they both had the same modification timestamp, but one was missing almost every file (just 4 files left), and the manifest file was incomplete

  113. cal0pteryx

    I saved that folder

  114. meson

    cal0pteryx: confirmed

  115. meson

cal0pteryx: what happens when you give that folder the name of the other?

  116. Jorge

Hi. For security, I should start publicizing my OMEMO fingerprints via my social media profiles, mail signatures etc. Is there any drawback to this practice I am not anticipating?

  117. lovetox

you can ... the only thing that comes to mind is, that a omemo key is not like pgp key where you have the same key for all your devices

  118. lovetox

over time you will get more and more keys, as you install gajim or other xmpp clients on more devices

  119. lovetox

means you need to change or update your published fingerprints more often

  120. cal0pteryx

meson: I wasn't able to test further, because the store version wasn't available anymore at that point

  121. lovetox

    i extracted the 2 packages

  122. lovetox

and nothing changed in the manifest other than the version

  123. lovetox

    maybe uninstall reinstall really works

  124. lovetox

i really doubt this is caused by Gajim ..

  125. mongol

I had an issue with gajim on qubes couldn't update to latest version. That being said this was year or so ago

  126. cal0pteryx

    > i really doubt this is caused by Gajim .. That would be extra-annoying

  127. Jorge

    Thank you lovetox!
