Gajim - 2024-01-28

Hello, I would like to have a few additional chats that do the same thing as "Note to self". I have now tried it once by creating additional groups in which only I am a member. However, Omemo does not work in these groups? What would be the best way to get this to work? Thanks, Stefan

In Gajim I see Owners, Participants,... of a MUC, but not "Members" is this a technical limitation, or is it possible to distinguish between Members and Guests?

its complicated

yes everything can be distinguished

in short, Gajim does only show if someone is member in the tooltip

not in the roster

why, because members have no special priviliges

your differentiation between "guest" and "member" does not really exist

you can not do more or less as member than as non-member

there is a special case, when you set a channel to moderated, then members usually can speak, and all others are called "visitors"

Gajim shows this. But for non-moderated channels, the difference between a member and a non-member does not exist ✏

at least not in the sense, that someone would need to look up members for some special reason

So, for windows users, is it better to recommend them to install gajim via the executable or through the windows store?

because with the executeable windows makes it kind of hard, you need to click away a warning

this is a chat application, to chat with other people, you seem to search for a synced note taking app

just host your own muc called "grocery list" invite your desired compatriots, force omemo, done.

I would make everyone member, who discusses nicely over the time. If we get too much spam, we could switch to moderated. Additionally I could create a MUC called mymuc_waitingroom and users can ask the mods there for the voice bit.

We can also see if new visitors have nasty usernames, or if there is a username we want to give member permissions.

the whole moderated thing has some poblems

if you grant someone voice, depending on the server this is not preserved, if the user leaves he loses voice

so you would need either a bot, or very active moderators ✏

but im not experienced in hosting big groupchats

currently you cannot use omemo if you are the only person in the room, you could have a workaround and create a second account, that you make member

this account does not need to be online, he just needs to be added as a member to the room
