Gajim - 2023-12-02

  1. fjklp

I think I'd prefer all my credentials be in the same keyring

  2. lovetox

    why?

  3. lovetox

never in my live i looked into a keyring

  4. lovetox

its just where the system stores passwords so they dont lie around in plain

  5. lovetox

users store there passwords somewhere else

  6. lovetox

i guess at least on linux and windows

  7. lovetox

on MacOS the keyring is probably the main password manager for users

  8. Geld

    Yooo

  9. bosswinner

How do I make it possible to receive chats from anyone? Not just certain people.

  10. Geld

I installed Gajim on Fedora and it says my group chat should be non-anonymouse blablabla to use OMEMO in a group

  11. Geld

    but it is

  12. Geld

    so what's up

  13. fjklp

bosswinner: Are you talking about direct one to one chats?

  14. Geld

  15. bosswinner

    fjklp yes i am

  16. fjklp

bosswinner: go to Accounts > Modify Accounts > account name > Privacy

  17. fjklp

check that Ignore Unknown Contacts is turned off

  18. bosswinner

Ok its off and can I receive chats if the other user has a different XMPP client. or only this one?

  19. fjklp

was it already off or did you turn it off just now?

  20. fjklp

there is another possible cause for this

  21. bosswinner

    Its already off

  22. ☭Mike Yellow

bosswinner, I guess your server blocks messages from strangers(non-contacts).

  23. bosswinner

    Whats the fix for this?

  24. fjklp

In that case, it's likely that your xmpp service provider has a setting that prevents users from receiving private messages from people who are not in your contact list. You have to add a person to your contact list to receive messages from them in this case. This is to prevent users receiving spam. If you want, you can also ask your service provider to disable this for you, I'm not sure if that's possible.

  25. ☭Mike Yellow

bosswinner, What happened exactly? Some people tried to send you messages but failed?

  26. bosswinner

    > bosswinner, What happened exactly? Some people tried to send you messages but failed? correct

  27. fjklp

or you can get an account with a provider that doesn't use this setting

  28. ☭Mike Yellow

    >your server blocks messages from strangers(non-contacts). Then that is the reason.

  29. bosswinner

Or what service provider would be best?

  30. fjklp

    no idea :)

  31. bosswinner

k ill do research i guess thank you

  32. fjklp

Is there any reason we would want to have multiple options in the list of recommended xmpp service providers where they all use the same xmpp server but have different domains?

  33. fjklp

Is there any reason we would want to have multiple domains in the list of recommended xmpp service providers where they all use the same xmpp server but have different domains?

  34. Geld

So that users have a choice of which server they would like to use.

  35. Geld

Balancing the usage of the servers so that no one server is the biggest.

  36. Geld

And XMPP, just like email, was meant to be "distributed/spread out". Hosted by multiple people, not just one entity.

  37. Geld

    To be independent.

  38. fjklp

I'm talking about having multiple domains listed that are all actually the same server, same ip address

  39. fjklp

I'm in the middle of writing a review of the whole list we have in gajim right now and I wanted to know what considerations I should make and if I should go as far as comparing srv records and such

  40. fjklp

Or, maybe we might want to give people choice of a domain for vanity reasons, but that burdens users with more choice that makes little difference

  41. lovetox

the list is anyway so small

  42. cal0pteryx

fjklp: please don't put too much effort in this. I'd like to add providers.xmpp.net to gajim at some point. Automation progressed a lot: https://providers.xmpp.net/blog/2023-11-22-xmpp-providers-automation/

  43. aura

Hello all, I have a non gajim question - which public server instances have you noticed has the most features enabled ? Like, archive management, longer message retention, better upload/download limits, and more XEP support ?

  44. lovetox

there is a list where you can look into https://providers.xmpp.net/

  45. aura

Oh cool, the detailed view lists what I was looking for. Thank you lovetox

  46. 222m5

aura: you can also check a server features at https://compliance.conversations.im/

lovetox: >> Are there any plans to restore a detached History Browser dialog? > no, what for? Because: 1) The sidebar is too narrow; 2) A detached dialog would be more convenient; 3) Extensive search and filtering (i.e. posts that contain "query" (or queries) from JID (or nickname) between periods of, etc.); 4) Dropdown menu of available hostory by JID.

  51. fjklp

    > the list is anyway so small yeah, but garbage should be removed in any case

  52. fjklp

It started when I found that a provider no longer existed and I was going to report it. Then I thought that I should not be lazy and figure out every provider that is a candidate to be removed and report it all at once.

  53. cal0pteryx

    A quick review doesn't hurt, sure :)

  54. fjklp

sch: See the tooltip for the search input field for the available filters. Note: nick filtering is currently unable to deal with spaces in nicks
