Hi. have jmp account and can make/receive msg/voice on android w/ Cheogram. also can send/receive messages on win with Gajim but voice option is grayed out. Don't see anything on the wiki/faq about this. would someone point me in right direction?

  2. fjklp

voice calls are not maintained or working at the moment but a few people are working on it so we might get it some time in the future

  3. rundown5568

    > voice calls are not maintained or working at the moment but a few people are working on it so we might get it some time in the future TYVM for the quick answer.

  4. procrastinator

hello, i can't join irc server using gajim, i get:

  5. procrastinator

    ``` https://conference.gajim.org:5281/pastebin/9c5cf1fe-0f46-48dc-8ae1-401541c2e480
  6. procrastinator
    ``` File "/usr/lib/python3.12/site-packages/gajim/gtk/start_chat.py", line 485, in _on_join_clicked ... raise ValueError(f'Trying to add GroupchatContact {jid}, ' ValueError: Trying to add GroupchatContact irc.libera.chat@biboumi.example.com, but contact already exists as irc.libera.chat@biboumi.example.com (example.com) (in roster: False) ```

  7. cal0pteryx

Isn't that the same issue you posted yesterday?

  8. P@sNox

    > P@sNox, seems your system cert store think these certs are invalid Right, but nothing changed apart upgrading the flatpak package, so i dont know if it's a local issue, or a flatpak special issue ?

  9. P@sNox

    lovetox: ^

  10. procrastinator

cal0pteryx, yes, it's the same issue and i wanted to know if there's something i'm doing wrong

  11. procrastinator

i can manage from cheogram, but gajim fails

  12. tomchaplin

Is anyone using Gajim with TOR?

  13. tomchaplin

I understand that it will wither hide or encrypt the traffic from ISP? is that it? Please correct me if i am wrong.

  14. tomchaplin

Account --> Modify Account --> Proxy --> Tor or Tor (Browser)

  15. tomchaplin

    I found this link https://www.reddit.com/r/xmpp/comments/svoua1/comment/hxka35q/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

  16. fjklp

tomchaplin: I've heard that DNS requests might escape the Tor connection and that it's best to run it like `torsocks -i gajim`, but I haven't thoroughly tested this so use with caution

  17. fjklp

I've also had problems with that method related to dns lookups

  18. tomchaplin

I didnt understood your method, probably coz I dont use CLI. I am guessing that first i need to Start TOR Browser on my Windows System and then change the setting in Gajim.

  19. fjklp

    > I understand that it will wither hide or encrypt the traffic from ISP? is that it? Please correct me if i am wrong. your ISP will not be able to see your traffic that is routed through Tor, but they will see that you are using Tor, unless you use a bridge

  20. tomchaplin

VPN will also achieve the same thing, no?

  21. fjklp

I don't know if tor browser includes torsocks, I think you have to download it separately from tor browser

  22. fjklp

    yes

  23. tomchaplin

    https://macaw.me:5443/upload/48ec68533ea6d30f9028f6e3025b226ad42f9a3e/rBgBe1kMuYRTW7t3Gbd5QeeJT0Nj6vPf9hvAQam6/8ebfbe8c-46cd-4d69-a223-3847cac3b710.png

  24. tomchaplin

There is an option to use bridges in the settings, however I dont know if it uses it by default

  25. tomchaplin

and I am looking up about torsocks now

  26. fjklp

I think the default is to not use a bridge

  27. tomchaplin

    oh ok

  28. tomchaplin

So i activated the Tor Bridge.

  29. tomchaplin

And now I changed the proxy to Tor (Browser)

  30. tomchaplin

So does it mean, that whatever I do on Gajim now is hidden from ISP? apart from the TORsocks issue?

  31. tomchaplin

but which is a better option? to use tor or to use a VPN?

  32. tomchaplin

Sorry for such silly questions, i am trying to read as much as I can but many times technical things go over my head.

  33. 23

    > but which is a better option? to use tor or to use a VPN? What for what are you trying to do. VPNs work through your browser and TOR generally also. Hiding your DNS requests can be done with DNS over HTTPS or TLS but needs to be set in your browser (normal use) or your router for network use.

  34. tomchaplin

If I want to hide my activity in the internet from the Big Brother, or wanna keep my XMPP and IRC conversations private with the groups and users itself, which practice should I use?

  35. 23

No simple answer but generally it is impossible to be anonymous on the internet. Most traffic over the net is encrypted anyway with TLS but the vulnerabilities are the servers whether that is your ISP, VPN, IRC or XMPP . There are lots of videos on the tube on the various risks and how to mitigate them.

  36. tomchaplin

    I agree with you :/

  37. tomchaplin

Its just that I want to use the best possible practice to use these softwares. Therefore all these questions.

  38. hannibal

Gajim's age rating in MS store seems to be wrong. IMO it should be 12+ and not 0+.

  39. rundown5568

How to send Direct Message to a user here? Do I have to add them as a contact and just message outside this channel, or other way?

  40. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    what? why?

  41. b00merang

    Has internet access

  42. b00merang

    Kids shouldn't have internet

  43. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    sure /s

  44. b00merang

    I not joke

  45. b00merang

Internet interactions in many places are legally considered 13+

  46. 222m5

rundown5568: you can send a Private Message, if they are in the muc … check the context menu of the user, if not there then try double-click

  47. ClapTrap

Hey guys. I just found my Gajim version in my Ubuntu 22.04 isn't the latest. And to get the latest I have to use Flatpak. Is there any other way to install the latest version of Gajim? Are there any Ubuntu repositories?

  48. travian

Hi, concerning changes/feedback to version 1.4+, I was wondering (perhaps asked several times, but I haven't found), whether there is a setting or a future implementation to get a common contact list (roster) for all accounts at once i.e. to group all accounts (one additional higher hierarchical level). I don't mind workspaces and the single window, but minimising the clicking would be nice esp. since quite often I just don't know where to find a specific contact ;)

  49. meson

travian: there's a search box, if you want to find a contact quickly

  50. lovetox

    travian: Ctrl + n

  51. lovetox

Has all contacts from all accounts

  52. travian

meson: thank you, this works for each account, but it doesn't work over all accounts

  53. travian

lovetox: thank you, that's perfect for me

  54. meson

    > thank you, this works for each account, but it doesn't work over all accounts Oh, true...
