Gajim - 2023-11-13

  1. Maverick

    Greetings!

  2. fjklp

shift+ctrl+tab seems is supposed to "switch to the previous unread chat" but seems to only switch the next chat higher on the list

  3. fjklp

I don't see it having anything to do with being read or unread

  4. fjklp

ctrl+1 ... 9 to switch to the first - ninth workspace is listed twice in the shortcuts list

  5. fjklp

ctrl+tab is the same, just cycles through chats regardless of unread messages

  6. fjklp

Regarding the new focus update: I tested all the shortcuts in the built-in shortcut list and they all worked for me.

  7. BChF

I am new to XMPP & Gajim...and i have not found how to enter the password to join a private room. I have searched the Gajim wiki without success....

  8. lovetox

    Gajim asks you for it

  9. lovetox

BChF: maybe describe what the problem is that you see

  10. BChF

    > BChF: maybe describe what the problem is that you see When i try to join the private room i have an error telling me that i cannot connect but no password is requested.

  11. Link Mauve

Also note that most private rooms are invite-based instead of password-based.

  12. ☭Mike Yellow

    BChF, The address is wrong.

  13. ☭Mike Yellow

BChF, ask your XMPP guide or the one who told you to join XMPP.

  14. BChF

    > Also note that most private rooms are invite-based instead of password-based. This may be an explanation ....i check. Thanks.

  15. chud

experimental repo with modern calls https://dev.gajim.org/wusspuss/gajim/-/tree/dtls-rtp to try it out you can try running the flatpak bundle here https://files.catbox.moe/5ae8hj.flatpak (should be as simple as `flatpak install 5ae8hj.flatpak`). The flatpak has been tested on archlinux and ubuntu so hopefully will just werk. flatpak sha256 0da3318758c54bebbbc72cd07abb008136316775b3fcdaacdab5b62ffe4abc16 Calls have been tested against Conversations, Dino and itself.

  16. chud

    test

  17. lovetox

BChF: you need to ask someone to invite you

  18. chud

is this group down or smth

  19. cal0pteryx

    chud: no, it's up :)

  20. cal0pteryx

chud: is that repo private? Can't access it

  21. wusspuss

    Test

  22. cal0pteryx

    Test

  23. chud

Not supposed to be private, let me see

  24. wusspuss

Ok apparently it was private by default. Public now

  25. cal0pteryx

    Great, works now!

  26. ☭Mike Yellow

Is Gajim going to have voice/video call function again!?

  27. chud

Hopefully yes, but only voice for now

  28. ☭Mike Yellow

Great, then they change the user manual by night. :D

  29. chud

It also adds some jmi support along the way, because conversations hasn't really shown itself to work well without it

  30. lovetox

    ☭Mike Yellow: not yet.

  31. lovetox

chud: thanks we will look into it

  32. cal0pteryx

    chud: thank you 👍

  33. ☭Mike Yellow

Which is the XMPP specification of Gajim V-Card?

  34. cal0pteryx

    Xep-0292

  35. ☭Mike Yellow

    Thanks.

  36. BChF

    > Also note that most private rooms are invite-based instead of password-based. It was the explanation. Thank you.

  37. Link Mauve

BChF, where did you find the password then if there were none?

  38. BChF

I have contacted the owner of the room i was trying to join and he invited me.

  39. BChF

    > BChF, where did you find the password then if there were none? The passwd has been given by another member of the private room...a snafu probably.

  40. tomchaplin

Hello, I am a new XMPP and Gajim User

  41. tomchaplin

Can someone please help me on how to connect IRC network and its rooms?

  42. tomchaplin

    13-11-2023 19:22:11 - tomchaplin: I am trying this command --> #channel%irc.snoonet.org@irc.ircnow.org

  43. tomchaplin

I get the error, The address is not reachable.

  44. tomchaplin

Do i need to add the Biboumi bridge somehow? Or maybe i am using the command wrongly

  45. tomchaplin

can someone please help me with this?

  46. lovetox

No seems right are you sure irc.ircnow.org has a IRC bridge ?

  47. lovetox

    You could try irc.jabberfr.org

  48. tomchaplin

Thanks a ton lovetox, irc.jabberfr.org worked

  49. tomchaplin

i thought it irc.rcnow.org has a bridge coz i saw this site https://wiki.ircnow.org/index.php?n=Ircnow.Servers

  50. tomchaplin

may I know where to find servers like irc.jabberfr.org to know whether they have bridge or not?

  51. sch

I see that Gajim now indicates of bot contacts. How does a stanza that indicates of being a bot looks like?

  52. lovetox

It's part of the identity of disco info we do on the jid

  53. lovetox

    Look up the xep0030

  54. lovetox

    Identity node

  55. tomchaplin

    https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0030.html

  56. tomchaplin

I saw this but it went all over my head.

  57. tomchaplin

however my issue is solved. I wonder if I can use irc.jabberfr.org to connect to different irc networks too.

  58. tomchaplin

Thanks again for your help lovetox. Really appreciate it.

  59. Link Mauve

We don’t limit which IRC service you can use, no.

  60. tomchaplin

    oh ok

  61. tomchaplin

there is one slight isssue though. When I entered that command, two new rooms appeared. One was the channel/room whose name I entered and the other Nickserv Room

  62. tomchaplin

There should be one more IRC Snoonet Server Room where I can send some commands

  63. tomchaplin

This Snoonet server room appears when I join through Matrix but not through XMPP

  64. tomchaplin

Does anyone have more info for explanation on this?

  65. tomchaplin

    Ooops sorry

  66. tomchaplin

    my mistake

  67. tomchaplin

    wait a min

  68. Link Mauve

Only the channel is a room, the rest are normal private conversations.

  69. tomchaplin

    Oh right

  70. tomchaplin

so there is this private conversation with the Server irc.snoonet.org@irc.jabberfr.org

  71. tomchaplin

and if i use the following command /msg NickServ REGISTER password email

  72. tomchaplin

    Unknown command: msg

  73. tomchaplin

I get the above error. Its pretty strange

  74. Link Mauve

That’s an IRC command, instead you open a chat with nickserv%irc.snoonet.org@irc.jabberfr.org and you tell it that.

  75. franck-x

hi there! maybe someone wrote a tool to migrate message history from dino to gajim ?

  76. franck-x

i'm about to do one it's look not too complicated but if it's already existing I will save my evening ;)

  77. tomchaplin

Link Mauve, I did that, and I get either --> No devices found to encypt this message to. Querying for devices now… OR No devices found to encypt this message to. Querying for devices now… again

  78. Link Mauve

Don’t use OMEMO, IRC doesn’t support that protocol.

  79. tomchaplin

    oh

  80. tomchaplin

Only unencrypted works, other i get the Missing necessary Encryption Plugin Error

  81. Daniel

    > It also adds some jmi support along the way, because conversations hasn't really shown itself to work well without it chud: what's the issue with Conversations and direct (non jmi) calling? I'm more than happy to fix any issues you encountered

  82. chud

It's been quirky. First it would ask which device to call and let me call, but then sometimes wouldn't even ask and so not work at all. Maybe it wasn't even conversations itself to blame, but some issue with the server or whatever. I figured it'd be more productive to just add at least some jmi support to gajim, since from what I've been told there are no clients that do dtls-rtp but not jmi.

  83. Daniel

chud: when you say wouldn't ask you mean you pressed the call button but Conversations didn't open 'calling' screen?

  84. Daniel

And that contact had no other devices open that would start ringing I assume?

  85. chud

I don't remember it in such great detail at this point, sorry. IIRC "discovering devices" would pop up. Yeah I don't think there were any other devices online, but not too sure. I didn't spend that much time trying to get it to work without jmi.

  86. tomchaplin

    https://macaw.me:5443/upload/48ec68533ea6d30f9028f6e3025b226ad42f9a3e/3r9b7zt7dQ1SHe8i6Amj0jI9YHipUSIpUmn68uKz/c854bf73-4b59-499a-a37e-8716ed1695c0.png

  87. tomchaplin

I cant change my nick. do you guys know, how can i do that?

  88. Daniel

chud: ok fair enough. 'discovering devices' is only shown when Conversations is in jmi mode. I just don't ever want to force other clients or developers to behave a certain way just because of some Conversations bug. So I'm happy to help if you run into any issue. But yeah in general JMI is a good thing in multi device environments

  89. chud

Daniel: IIRC you told me back then that the device chooser for non-jmi contacts was long untested, precisely because there are no clients supporting dtls-rtp but not jmi. My experimental gajim branch doesn't even try to support non-jmi contacts as of yet, and from what I've learnt so far there's very little point in spending time on that. For that, I would actually have to intentionally disable jmi support in a contact to test against, create a whole new code path with a dialog, only for it to possibly be used in some theoretical future client that for some reason doesn't support jmi, and even then I highly doubt such a future client will ever exist, because why *wouldn't* anyone want jmi at the end of the day?

  90. fjklp

tomchaplin: are you not joined to the chat in which you want to set the nick? Are you specifically wanting to change your nick while not joined?

  91. lovetox

tomchaplin, like you do on IRC probably with /nick

  92. lovetox

you need to do that in the private conversations with irc.snoonet.org@irc.jabberfr.org

  93. lovetox

this chat is like the irc console

  94. Link Mauve

lovetox, no, with biboumi you should be able to change your nick normally using the normal XMPP features.

  95. Link Mauve

Although you should make sure it is the same for all MUCs of a single IRC server.

  96. lovetox

no i think we disabled that not sure

  97. Link Mauve

    Why would you?

  98. lovetox

because it was broken i think

  99. lovetox

biboumi did not deal well with it

  100. Link Mauve

You should open issues, not just disable the normal features.

  101. fjklp

oh, yeah. Looks like nickname change is disabled in the biboumi chats.

  102. lovetox

this is pretty complex when you think about it

  103. pep.

"Although you should make sure it is the same for all MUCs of a single IRC server." Biboumi should tell you that

  104. pep.

"Your nickname changed to bar, 110, 210" (I guess?)

  105. pep.

"Oh ok thanks, I'll update my UI"

  106. lovetox

Link Mauve, i just tested, typing "nick yournewnick" in the console works as expected and all nicks in all joined channels are changed

  107. Link Mauve

Until the next time you reconnect, and Gajim will pick the bookmarks’ name again.

  108. Link Mauve

Because it has no clue that the message you sent is actually meant to be your nick.

  109. Link Mauve

Since it is just that, a message.

  110. lovetox

no you forget the nick change presence in the MUC spec

  111. lovetox

biboumi sends a nick change by server presence to all MUCs

  112. Link Mauve

Oh? Gajim uses that as the default nick the next time it rejoins the same MUC?

  113. lovetox

if Gajim receives it it updates the bookmarks

  114. Link Mauve

Hmm, perhaps poezio should do the same eventually.

  115. lovetox

now i will test if biboumi does the right think if i change nick via muc nick change in a single muc

  116. lovetox

works also the same via normal nick change

  117. lovetox

i guess they fixed whatever was wrong, or gajim now better handles the server side nick change

  118. lovetox

i guess we can enable the nickchange again

  120. fjklp

    cool

  121. lovetox

what biboumi does not get right, is it trys to join me into channel before executing the register command

  122. lovetox

what biboumi does not get right, is it trys to join me into channel before executing the identify command

  123. lovetox

then tells me i cannot join because im not identified, then 1 second later it executes the identify

  124. Shiva

    Hello, new here 😊️

  125. Shiva

Did anybody have ever luck using Gajim to make Audio-/Video calls?

  126. Shiva

I know that in the Wiki it's mentioned as unmaintained.

  127. Shiva

But I am sooooo close. Help -> Features shows all good, except Upnp. But with a STUN server ringing comes through, video windows opens ... Gajim crashes.

  128. Shiva

I am on Ubuntu 23.10 with Gajim 1.8.1 with Wayland and Pipewire.

  129. Shiva

Also tried Flatpak with Gajim 1.8.3, but same results. Video Test a bit more stable when using Xorg instead Wayland. But still no luck.

  130. Shiva

Any hope or should I just drop it?

  131. fjklp

    it doesn't work

  132. fjklp

someone has been working on getting audio calls to work, so there's a chance that part could be working soonish

  133. lovetox

Shiva, drop it for now, and wait a bit, there are some contributions, and maybe it will work son, at least Audio. Video is not anywhere near.

  134. Shiva

Okay. Have spent plenty of hours trying ... totally willing to give up for now 😂️

  135. lovetox

    fjklp, thanks for testing shortcuts

  136. lovetox

i think you missed the differencte between CTRL + 1..9 and ALT + 1..9

  137. lovetox

    i dont see it doubled

  138. lovetox

no damn, you are right its doubled

  139. lovetox

the unread shortcut works fine for me

  140. lovetox

what you probably dont know it cycles the chats normally if there is no unread message

  141. lovetox

maybe you expected it to do nothing

    >fix: ShortcutWindow: Remove duplicated entry you found it :)

  144. fjklp

    > what you probably dont know it cycles the chats normally if there is no unread message I have many unread chats and it will cycle through them in the listed order, whether there are unread messages or not

  145. fjklp

    > what you probably dont know it cycles the chats normally if there is no unread message I have many chats with unread messages and it will cycle through them in the listed order, whether there are unread messages or not

  146. fjklp

I assume unread messages just means that there is a gray counter showing unread messages and not unread messages that mention me

  147. fjklp

I assume that if I have it will skip over chats with no unread messages to the next chat that has unread messages, but it does not

  148. fjklp

I assume that it will skip over chats with no unread messages to the next chat that has unread messages, but it does not

  149. lovetox

you need to be more specific than how to reproduce it

  150. lovetox

i tested having selected one chat

  151. lovetox

and another has unread, the shortcut jumps to that, and it skips another inbetween which has no unread messages

  152. lovetox

ok grey counter does not count as unread

  153. lovetox

it jumps only to blue ones

  154. fjklp
