Also, this may not happen if you and your contact are in a same server.

That is an anti-spam setting of the receiver's server. Blocking non-contact messages.

I added to contacts and shared status and it still wasn't working. Next, I created a couple of test accounts on a different server and it seems to be working now.

yes other sounds are working. for example, youtube, mp3 audio files play fine.

I'm on debian and pretty vanilla up to now.

I guess I'm missing codec for wav files?

If I play the included wav files with mpv, there is no sound.

manual playing is working now but from inside Gajim, sadly, the sounds aren't making any sound. :P

it should appear there while it's playing back
