Gajim - 2019-08-28

  1. tom you must be punished now raver
  2. tom You've done the unthinkable
  3. asterix xep333 in muc: https://conference.gajim.org:5281/pastebin/b6e5f933-9652-47c9-8982-7bbd92112bfa
  4. Odo Gajim doesn't seem to synchronize private chats from public MUCs, is that a regular and known problem? I just miss some chat lines in such a private chat (it's unencrypted because it's from a public MUC, so no Omemo involved this time) and Gajim doesn't seem to synchronize them after restart, which usually works for chats missing in MUCs and normal private chats.
  5. wurstsalat Hm yeah I think MUC MAM for private messages is problematic
  6. flow at best, it is underspecified
  7. Odo wurstsalat, flow: ok, good to know that and good it works e.g. in Conversations (and hopefully in other xmpp-clients)
  8. wurstsalat Could be server dependent as well (don't know)
  9. lovetox weird asterix, maybe ask in prosody whats that about
  10. lovetox i think we have to write string extraction from markdown files ourself
  11. asterix Then hugo is not tranlatable ??
  12. Zash Translatable how?
  13. asterix Get a po file or sth similar
  14. Zash No, it doesn't do that
  15. Zash If you have translated .md files for the same post it can link them together
  16. ButterflyOfFire Yes we need a standardized file format to be translated.
  17. Zash I started looking at something, po4a maybe it was called?
  18. ButterflyOfFire For example .md is not sweatable for RTL languages (hard to translate)
  19. ButterflyOfFire We need something such .po gettext conversion or .yml, .json … or anything else.
  20. asterix Arg. Hard to ask translators to use git, create translated files, MR and so on. I'd like to be able to extract strings and put them in translate.gajim.org.
  21. asterix And if the german file is not created we get a blank page instead of the english one
  22. ButterflyOfFire asterix: nope you can set a fallback language if the page is not translated I guess on Hugo.
  23. lovetox no asterix thats just a mis configuration
  24. asterix Ok
  25. lovetox but to be honest, look at the page, there is not much to translate
  26. ButterflyOfFire Not yet lovetox :)
  27. lovetox i think we can use some python syntax and wrap strings in _()
  28. asterix Translators have to know md format, use git, ...
  29. lovetox extract it with gettext translate it, then write a script that replaces them
  30. lovetox asterix im not sure its useful to have 33 languages most of them incomplete
  31. lovetox you, me, daniel alone could make france, german, english
  32. asterix Website has only a few languages
  33. lovetox and i dont see much more on gajim.org right now, even with X years of it beeing theoretically translateable
  34. ButterflyOfFire May be arabic is comming too :)
  35. lovetox The Development page for example almost never changes
  36. asterix https://translate.gajim.org/projects/gajim-website/
  37. asterix Only the news changes
  38. lovetox and sometimes a feature
  39. lovetox its not so much the git workflow that make me think
  40. lovetox its the problem that you dont know if a page is correctly translated
  41. lovetox as in complete
  42. asterix And when a string changes, the translator can't know
  43. lovetox because only you change the index.md , does not invalidate index.de.md
  44. lovetox it will still be there and incomplete but nobody knows about it
  45. lovetox i think we should write a little markdown string extractor
  46. lovetox create a pot file, translate it, then replace the strings
  47. asterix Then we put it in pootle, then write a script that generate the de.md file? Quite complexe IMHO
  48. lovetox its only find and replace stringws
  49. lovetox if we mark the strings with some syntax
  50. wurstsalat Can't we use gettext for exactly that
  51. lovetox like __(( string ))__
  52. lovetox wurstsalat, can gettext parse markdown files?
  53. lovetox i doubt it
  54. asterix and parse po file, ...
  55. Zash https://linux.die.net/man/1/po4a > The po4a ( PO for anything) project goal is to ease translations (and more interestingly, the maintenance of translations) using gettext tools on areas where they were not expected like documentation.
  56. Zash I never quite figured out how to use that tho
  57. lovetox asterix we dont need to parse the po file
  58. lovetox we can just load it into a python script as the current language
  59. lovetox and pass all extracted markdown strings to it
  60. lovetox and let python translate that
  61. wurstsalat Sounda interesting for modernxmpp.net as well (they face the same issue)
  62. lovetox but yeah its a little project someone must have time to do
  63. wurstsalat Ah modernxmpp.org it was
  64. lovetox Or asterix we only translate the news
  65. ButterflyOfFire asterix: Check how F-Droid team made it possible to translate their doc :) (Jekyll Markdown) https://gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroid-website/tree/master/tools
  66. lovetox these are one files, never change after translation
  67. lovetox and it falls back to english so everybody knows if translation is missing
  68. ButterflyOfFire Check this tool specifically : https://gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroid-website/blob/master/tools/i18n.sh
  69. ButterflyOfFire It uses po4a as Zash suggested.
  70. ButterflyOfFire We use Weblate in fact but the result will be the same for PoEditor, I think.
  71. lovetox thanks ButterflyOfFire
  72. ButterflyOfFire You're welcome lovetox :)
  73. ButterflyOfFire And any one of you has a Mastodon account or even Gajim project. Please feel free to ping me. There is a quite nice community over there :)
  74. ButterflyOfFire I can ping other translator to contribute :)
  75. ButterflyOfFire I can ping other translators to contribute :)
  76. ButterflyOfFire Fdroid team is quite active here : https://mastodon.technology/@fdroidorg
  77. ButterflyOfFire People from Gnome, KDE, NextCloud, Dino, Kaidan … are on Mastodon. Why not welcoming Gajim :)
  78. ButterflyOfFire Will be happy to see you there too and hear news about Gajim published there :)
  79. ButterflyOfFire Allez, je go. À toute o/

  91. lovetox should we just show that muc info instead?
