  30. Link Mauve lovetox, looks ok from here, when did that happen?
  31. tom hello
  32. tom Is Is it still possible to build Gajim with GTK+2 NOT gtk+3?
  33. wurstsalat Last gtk2 branch was 0.16 with 0.16.9 as last release. 1.0 builds on top of gtk3
  34. Link Mauve tom, you don’t “build” Gajim, it’s fully written in Python.
  35. Link Mauve And keeping a software compatible with the dead gtk2 would be hell, especially since you have no compiler to check for a good use of the API.
  36. tom Is there a way to use the 1.x release with gtk2 ?
  37. Link Mauve tom, no, 1.0 was the first release which switched to gtk3, and gtk2 isn’t compatible.
  38. Link Mauve GTK+ never tried to keep the API compatible between major versions.
  39. Link Mauve They are major for a reason.
  40. Link Mauve The ABI stays backwards compatible during the entire lifetime of a major version though.
  41. tom ok, would It be possible for me to backport features into the 0.x relase and increment the minor and patch version levels?
  42. hannibal What's wrong with gtk3?
  43. Link Mauve tom, anything would be possible, but how many months of work are you willing to pour into that?
  44. tom whatever it takes, as long as it's not gtk3 or gnome3
  45. Link Mauve There’s been multiple years of improvements going into the 1.x branches.
  46. tom like what?
  47. Link Mauve tom, Gajim very much isn’t GNOME, it doesn’t adhere to its design views.
  48. tom gtk2 is stable and mature. there is nothing wrong with gtk2. gtk3 is not. gtk3 is poorly designed, and the gnome devs change apis every few months purely for the sake of changing things. they are already on gtk4 if i recall
  49. Link Mauve tom, gtk2 is dead and abandonned, and doesn’t support current systems.
  50. tom that is false
  51. tom gtk2 still receives patches, and is supported on every system i've used
  52. Link Mauve gtk3 provides huge improvements on top of pretty much everything gtk2 did.
  53. tom Gentoo. Devuan, even OpenBSD
  54. Link Mauve tom, well, it wouldn’t run natively on mine.
  55. tom what are you running?
  56. Link Mauve tom, note that gtk3’s API and ABI have been stable since 3.0, see https://abi-laboratory.pro/?view=timeline&l=gtk+
  57. Link Mauve tom, Wayland.
