Gajim - 2019-01-07

  1. rom1dep the new settings dialog is quite neat :)
  2. Nothing4You there's a typo in https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/wikis/help/gajimmacosx
  3. Nothing4You in the "Optional: add an icon:" part it should be "cd ~/Applications/Gajim.app/Contents"

  5. daddy99 Hi! I can't use video/audio calls with gajim 1.1.0
  6. daddy99 the buttons are gray
  7. daddy99 what might be causing the problem and how to fix it?
  8. rom1dep lovetox: updated gajim on w7 to 1.1.1, I can crash when changing the keyboard layout. Wasn't there a fix release?
  9. lovetox Thx fixed Nothing4You
  10. lovetox rom1dep, its a bug in the current GTK version, we downgrade on the next bug fix release
  11. lovetox which i will push soon
  12. lovetox you should downgrade to Gajim 1.1.0 for now
  13. lovetox daddy99, audio/video is broken and not maintained, so at the moment there is no way for you to use it
  14. daddy99 awesome
  15. Hanno Boeck hi, I regularly have a problem that the OMEMO plugin just "switches itself off" without any apparent reason
  16. Hanno Boeck anyone else seeing this and any idea what the reason is?
  17. Hanno Boeck (Linux, gajim 1.0.3)
  18. rom1dep lovetox: good to know. I can be your guinea pig if you feel like offering early builds
  19. bot Sebastiaan Lokhorst created an issue in _website_ < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/website/issues/20 >: #20: < Broken links >
  20. ta Hanno Boeck, no possibility to update to 1.1+ with latest OMEMO plugin?
  21. Hanno Boeck ta, oh I wasn't aware we're already at 1.1.1
  22. ta I have no idea if older releases of Gajim receive enough attention from testers
  23. Hanno Boeck I should check that. updates in gentoo have been slow due to an unrelated bug in gtk
  24. ta I assume only development and latest release are testet because of resources ;-)
  25. ta If i remember correctly you need to copy the plugin installer for the new version by hand. But OMEMO Keys are not lost during update procedure.
  26. lovetox ta, package maintainer should include the plugin installer or offer some other package for it
  27. lovetox Hanno Boeck this issue is not known to me
  28. lovetox what do you mean by switching off
  29. lovetox the encryption in a specific chat is switched off
  30. lovetox or the whole plugin is deactivated
  31. ta now that i think of it, i had this issue on Windows. The maintainer was me ;-)
  32. ta On Archlinux everything went well ;-)
  33. debacle Hanno Boeck, which is your OS? Also welche Linux-Distro?
  34. Hanno Boeck debacle, gentoo linux
  35. Hanno Boeck whole plugin got deactivated multiple times
  36. Hanno Boeck "official gentoo package" is still at 0.x, update is kinda blocked due to a gtk+ crash bug
  37. debacle Hanno Boeck, sorry, I can help only with Debian and maybe with derivatives (Mint/Tails/Ubuntu).

  39. gutigen afternoon, it seems that until you trust someone's device in omemo chat, you can't see that person messages at all... wouldn't it be better to show that message happened, but is encrypted and you can't see content until you trust it?
  40. gutigen how it is now leads to confusion, since Gajim does not inform user that someone joined the chat and needs extra step of trusting device
  41. asterix Sure, when you sync messages between devices, your receive thousands of messages you can't decrypt (because your Gajim didn't have an Omemo key until now for ex). Do you want to see this warning for each message?
  42. gutigen honestly, some notification taht there is new user requiring trust would be enough, right now I log in and see a conversation between people and no messages from a person until I trust that device
  43. Eduard Or have something similar to the "Blind Trust Before Verification" of Conversatios.
  44. Link Mauve asterix, a counter message would have the same effect.
  45. Link Mauve Use the LMC path to update the counter to show “1312 encrypted messages haven’t been able to be decrypted for reason bla bla bla.”
  46. wurstsalat There is an open issue for BTBV
  47. wurstsalat There was also a discussion about how to notify a user about the situation that there are encrypted messages, this is known
  48. gutigen so it is wip, alright
  49. qrsBRWN I really like how easy it is to communicate with the Gajim project. Thanks for the good work and being available and approachable. Many projects I have encountered over the years has been much harder to communicate with.
  50. gutigen *cough* conversations *cough*
  51. qrsBRWN nods
  52. Eduard > Or have something similar to the "Blind Trust Before Verification" of Conversatios. *Conversations*
  53. Eduard > *cough* conversations *cough* Thanks.

  55. profp30 Hello. I get a message from Gajim when I Try to send an OMEMO encrypted message to ONE of my contacts: No devices found. Query in progress...
  56. profp30 I have upgraded to GAJIM 1.1.1 today. Only one contact is affected. Sending UNENCRYPTED to the contact works.
  57. Eduard > Hello. I get a message from Gajim when I Try to send an OMEMO encrypted message to ONE of my contacts: > No devices found. Query in progress... Your contact doesn't have OMEMO keys.
  58. profp30 So what this message actually mean?
  59. profp30 Eduard, thank you. The contact is missing MY fingerprints?
  60. profp30 or MY LOCAL gajim is missing the fingerprints of this contact?
  61. Eduard No, just doesn't have OMEMO keys from their side.
  62. Eduard Probably he's using a client that doesn't support OMEMO.
  63. Eduard If he's using Gajim probably haven't installed or correctly installed the OMEMO plugin.
  64. profp30 Okay, thank you very much Eduard
  65. Eduard See omemo.top to know what XMPP clients support OMEMO.

  67. asterix gutigen: BTBV won't help in the example I gave. But yes Link Mauve, a counter could help, but I don't think it's as simple as LMC. We have to remember that the las message was the warning too ...
  68. bot Philipp Hörist closed an issue in _gajim_ < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/issues/9532 >: #9532: < Getting Error "Connection closed by local host" while connecting to XMPP chat contact >
  69. lovetox gutigen, groupchat is complicated
  70. lovetox 1. we display message from contacs where you didnt trust the fingerprint yet
  71. lovetox 2. but it could be that the contact just doesnt encrypt for your device
  72. lovetox its essentially a key exchange problem
  73. lovetox problem with groupchat right now is, that you should add all members of the groupchat to your roster
  74. lovetox otherwise it will be tricky
  75. gutigen wouldn't ideal behaviour then be automatic prompt to add new omemo group chat person to roster?
  76. gutigen check against the group chat list, prompt to add
  77. gutigen if omemo is present only ofc
  78. lovetox yes i guess this would be a help
  79. lovetox i try to improve this a bit in the future
  80. gutigen lovely ;)
  81. sisterandmother the peer to peer file trnasfer is reeally slow for me
  82. sisterandmother is it just slow?
  83. sisterandmother or is it a problem on my end?
  84. asterix There are many way to do it. Socks5, ibb
  85. asterix Ibb is very slow, add a lot of load to the server, but works everytime. It's used as fallback if socks5 doesn't work
  86. lovetox yeah would need debug logs what file transfer is actually used
  87. sisterandmother where do i find my debug log
  88. sisterandmother i get about 15 kb/s
  89. lovetox hm what system are you on?
  90. sisterandmother debian on a macbook
  91. sisterandmother stretch
  92. sisterandmother internet is otherwise fine
  93. sisterandmother i leave tor on but that's only for Firefox, it might be interfering though
  94. sisterandmother i dont have gajim configured to use it though
  95. sisterandmother and my friend has it when sending to me
  96. gutigen sisterandmother does it always work slow or is it only with specific person?
  97. lovetox then start gajim from console with -v and maybe redirect all output to some file
  98. sisterandmother oke
  99. sisterandmother will do
  100. sisterandmother have only tried with one person
  101. lovetox then start some filetransfer and after a minute end it and check the logfile for file related stuff
  102. lovetox but it will be quite noisy
  103. gutigen try with someone else, it might be a problem with route between you and other person (since it's p2p)
  104. gutigen you could try sending through tor or vpn, which will change the route it goes through
  105. lovetox fastest way is if your server has setup a socks5 proxy
  106. lovetox but first we have to determine if socks5 is even used
  107. sisterandmother yeah it says that were using ibb
  108. sisterandmother does socks5 encrypt?
  109. lovetox most of the time not
  110. lovetox if you want encrypted you should use httpupload and omemo
  111. sisterandmother normally what I do
  112. sisterandmother just wanted to check if this would work
  113. sisterandmother why is IBB so slow?
  114. lovetox lots of overhead, it transfers the data over the xmpp connection
  115. sisterandmother oh right through xml stanzas
  116. lovetox yes
  117. lovetox p2p encryption is sadly not a good supported thing around xmpp clients at the moment
  118. asterix If jingle is used for negociation, xls can be used to encrypt (I don't know if it's supported by other clients)
  119. lovetox it is not
  120. lovetox its not even an experimental xep
  121. lovetox its an idea that somebody send to the standards inbox
  122. asterix Yep
  123. lovetox jingle with omemo encrypted is pretty easy to implement
  124. lovetox probably a few hours
  125. lovetox but who has the time :)
