  1. andrey.g Presences are not displayed anymore: "Presence with invalid show".
  2. lovetox can you give me a stanza?
  3. lovetox you did update nbxmpp andrey.g ?
  4. andrey.g In a moment. But even your presence "away at 00:57:39" without error has not been displayed.
  5. andrey.g Yes, updated.
  6. lovetox how do you install nbxmpp?
  7. lovetox with setup.py?
  8. andrey.g <presence to='jid@server/gajim.P0UTV5AE' from='conversations@conference.siacs.eu/pol' type='unavailable'><x xmlns='http://jabber.org/protocol/muc#user'><item r ole='none' affiliation='none'/></x></presence>
  9. andrey.g gajim.git$ PYTHONPATH=/home/andrey/progs/python-nbxmpp.git ./launch.py ...
  10. lovetox are you sure that works?
  11. lovetox hm how could we find out ..
  12. lovetox i think i raise the nbxmpp version
  13. andrey.g I do it always this way.

  15. lovetox update now
  16. lovetox then look at the gajim -> about
  17. qrsBRWN Hi everyone. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in getting Gajim to not have bright white background when not running Gnome?
  18. lovetox ah damn i can reproduce now
  19. lovetox qrsBRWN, what Gajim version?
  20. qrsBRWN 1.0.3
  21. lovetox in 1.1.1 you can activate dark mode in preferences
  22. lovetox andrey.g, its just a log issue
  23. qrsBRWN Many thanks for the quick reply
  24. bot Philipp Hörist pushed 1 commit to branch _refs/heads/master_ of _python-nbxmpp_ < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/python-nbxmpp >: *ba07eccc* < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/python-nbxmpp/commit/ba07eccc070bdecb926ec600fa99b07b5dbf807d > Dont print log message on valid show
  25. lovetox andrey.g, should be good now, i just accidently printed the invalid message when no show was provided, no show is valid though
  26. andrey.g OK, restarting
  27. lovetox andrey.g, i think i now what you mean, you mean join/part and status messages in muc?
  28. lovetox we have a new menu "settings" in the groupchat menu
  29. lovetox check it out
  30. andrey.g lovetox, that's it, thanks.
  31. lovetox you can now set it per groupchat, the option in the bookmarks is now useless, still have to remove it
  32. andrey.g So now not only sync threshold but also chat settings can be set only separately for every groupchat and there is no way to set the same option for several MUCs at once?
  33. lovetox you mean a default?
  34. lovetox because setting 20 mucs at once is not a valid use case in my book
  35. lovetox sync threshold has a default in ACE
  36. lovetox print status not yet, but i probably add one
  37. andrey.g So defaults for new mucs will be good. The issue with already bookmarked one remains. I see MUCs as directories in a file browser, where you can select some of them and invoke a context menu. Properties that can be meaningfuly applied to all of them are available to change.
  38. lovetox sorry i see this as something that would be very very rarely used
  39. lovetox i strife for good defaults, and a option where you can change the default
  40. lovetox but i see no use case in activating print join/leaf for 20 mucs, and 20 minutes later you deactivate it again
  41. lovetox ..
  42. lovetox i agree it needs maybe 1 minute to click through all mucs and set what you want when you transition to this gajim version
  43. lovetox have to go
  44. lovetox have a good night
  45. andrey.g Well, if default would be simultaneously with the new feature, I wouldn't even notice it, so maybe it is ok.
  46. andrey.g Till tomorrow.
  47. andrey.g Clicking on "Information" for my and other groupchat participants gives: Resource: (0) Status: Has errors

  71. mrDoctorWho I guess it's caused by chatstates, but can't Gajim be a little bit more conservative about them?
  72. lovetox oh nice thats a bug, because after each tab the input box is empty so it jumps between composing/not composing

  77. Sebastian hey :D one short question.... i'm using one account with Conversations and with Gajim at the same time... I'm in a MUC with 3 other guys... 2 of these other guys use Conversations on Two (2) mobile phones. They appear only ONCE in the groupchat (with two clients), but i appear TWICE in the groupchat with two clients... why is that? It doesn't really bother myself, but i'd like to know :)
  78. Sebastian Well... i figured it out now
  79. Sebastian if one of the clients has a slightly different nick (case sensitive...) it will appear twice...
  80. Sebastian :-) so everything is alright....
  81. lovetox yes Sebastian if you have the same nick, the MUC Server merges you into one
  82. Sebastian thx 😊
  83. Sebastian thx 😊 - for confirming
  84. Sebastian one more question though: is the team planning to introduce inline readmarkers yet? on (some) obile messengers you can see how far exactly your contact (or contacts in a MUC) have read in the messages... in Gajim i'm never really sure how far my contacts have read what was written....
  85. Sebastian one more question though: is the team planning to introduce inline readmarkers yet? on (some) mobile messengers you can see how far exactly your contact (or contacts in a MUC) have read in the messages... in Gajim i'm never really sure how far my contacts have read what was written....
  86. Link Mauve Sebastian, you can never be sure of that anyway.
  87. Link Mauve It’s often more of a stalking tool than something that brings any benefit, tbh.
  88. pep. ^ agreed
  89. pep. At most what I want is to know if the people I sent to received it. I don't want to know they've read it
  90. 4223 when one can deactivate it, inside my family its nice to have, otherwise you ask again and again for some things to buy or organise.
  91. lovetox Sebastian, yes i plan it for 1.2
  92. Sebastian cool!
  93. Sebastian thx
  94. Sebastian Link Mauve & pep. i think it should be handled privacy friendly. You should be able to opt in to "send read status"... at least in conversations you can do that...
  95. Sebastian same as for typing... not everyone sends typing notification
  96. pep. These two are the first things I deactivate in a client. But then I'm probably not your typical user
  97. Sebastian but its helpful to see if someone is answering - altough it is sometimes confusing when both people are typing at the same time and then stop, because they wait for either one to finish typing ;)
  98. Sebastian pep., i'm not sure what the typcial user is.... i don't think it is black or white anyway ;)
  99. pep. The typing notifications just kill me, every time I get them I feel obliged to stop and wait, even if I just happened to pass by the tab
  100. Sebastian i fully understand and respect you don't like to send that feature... but what i asked was not the way it is sent, but rather how the info that you recieved from someone else is presented...
  101. Link Mauve Sebastian, it’s more pervasive than that, you may globally like this feature but not with a specific contact, or even not with a specific discussion with a contact at a particular time.
  102. Sebastian yeah, i agree.. if you want a "per contact" setting, it gets complicated and weird
  103. Link Mauve The presence of read receipts is shaping our expectations of others.
  104. Sebastian is it too much to have expectations?
  105. pep. Depends what kind of expectations
  106. Sebastian i don't have too many jabber contacts (just a handful) but i use it with my wife (who also uses whatsapp 😑...) instead of sending SMS/Text. If i sent something important/urgent and i do not get a response in time (or a read receipt) i can choose to call her...
  107. pep. "You read that one right away 20s ago why do you not read this one now!!" "calm down I was taking a ####" :)
  108. Sebastian well... ;)
  109. pep. Yes that happens..
  110. Link Mauve I’m not against them per se, but I’ve seen too many people around me languish when someone they know has marked their message as read but didn’t answer.
  111. Sebastian then you're free to disable it :)
  112. Sebastian pep., yes it happens (to me too...)
  113. Link Mauve Sebastian, what don’t you understand in “pervasive”? It’s something you end up wanting, and you end up disappointed when your contacts signal they “ignored” you through it, sometimes even involuntarily.
  114. Sebastian sry. no native speaker. Had a different understanding of the word "pervasive"
  115. Link Mauve Oh sorry, I didn’t know.
  116. Sebastian well... fwiw ... i'm used to people not answering after they have read my messages, i don't have a problem with it
  117. Sebastian no worries, i was not offended
  118. Sebastian so to summarize my thoughts: i understand there is pros and cons wrt. to received/read/typing notifications. For me the pros weigh more. For you, i understand, the cons. So lets just hope it will be configurable in a way that everyone can live with it ;) non f2f communication always differs a lot (with pros and cons again..) over remote texting over whatever medium...

  122. Link Mauve Sebastian, I’m not against it per se either, we just have to understand that it does change how people communicate.
  123. Sebastian it does indeed!
  124. Link Mauve For the record, I did implement the MUC chatstates in Gajim. :p
  125. Sebastian good to known
  126. Sebastian good to know
  127. pep. Things we do..
  128. qrsBRWN Is there any plan for an aggregated room list in gajim? What I mean by that is either building a room list from the room lists of a server list or integrating something like search.jabber.network.
  129. lovetox you can search for rooms
  130. lovetox use the service discovery window
  131. Link Mauve pep., well, it is imo more useful than in one-to-one, because we are more participants and thus chatstates allow us to know who is paying attention to the discussion, or who is writing a wall of text.
  132. pep. Yeah I know why you like chatstates in MUC :)
  133. qrsBRWN Doesn't that require that I actually point out the specific server to query lovetox?
  134. lovetox hm yes but yours is preselected
  135. lovetox how would this otherwise work?
  136. qrsBRWN Either one supply a server list and what is returned is an aggregation of the room lists from those server or integration towards a service that does that already. I feel I'm being unclear. I'm not sure how to word this to convey what I mean.
  137. lovetox i know what you mean, but i dont feel i can make this usable
  138. Sebastian Link Mauve, please help me one more time, i don't speak XMPP lingo fluently. .: what chat states does gajim support in MUC? I don't see any typing or read notifications here at all... ?
  139. lovetox say there are 100 servers, i have to query 100 servers for their rooms, which send me up to 1000 rooms each
  140. lovetox this query needs hours
  141. pep. lovetox, RSM in disco when :P
  142. lovetox does not help, you want to search for a room
  143. lovetox so you need the full list of rooms
  144. Link Mauve Sebastian, it sends active/inactive/composing/paused states, but doesn’t display them, although other clients such as poezio will display them.
  145. pep. ah I see, I ws missing that bit
  146. Sebastian thx
  147. lovetox i guess we could use search.jabber.network
  148. lovetox have to ask if thats ok for them
  149. qrsBRWN lovetox that or having something like it.
  150. lovetox qrsBRWN, thats a dedicated server that scans 100 servers for mucs
  151. lovetox i cannot do that as a client
  152. qrsBRWN Of course
  153. lovetox only because you MAYBE sometime want to access that list
  154. qrsBRWN So it needs to be a service like search.jabber.network (or exactly that).
  155. qrsBRWN Makes sense
  156. lovetox yes i see they have a api for exactly that
  157. lovetox https://search.jabber.network/docs/api
  158. qrsBRWN Nice
  159. lovetox so what is your use case exactly, you would imagine Gajim shows you a form, you type in a search name, and it displays you the results and on click you join?
  160. qrsBRWN Well, I'm mainly interested in searches for keywords. Say I want to find a linux group with english as primary language or groups with my region in their description.
  161. qrsBRWN While it would be neat to be able to order the output based on criteria (like usercount etc) that is probably a feature others are more interested in than me.

  253. amami debacle: Yeah, I think I will do that. But if the gajim downloader uses a secure source and verifies the downloaded package, I can live with that too.
  254. lovetox redditor, not easy to answer, depends if the room has MAM or not, but in general you can only get history since your first join not from before
  255. debacle if I remember correctly, then "sudo apt update" and then "sudo apt install -t stretch-backports gajim" (which will automatically fetch the gajim-omemo package, too, I hope)
  256. lovetox Chunk is there not a Gajim AUR package?
  257. lovetox if you already determined that the same problem happens only on git HEAD, then it has no value that you use a dev version which has even more problems
  258. lovetox also install gdb
  259. lovetox gdb python3
  260. lovetox run gajim
  261. lovetox if it stops because Gajim kills it self, type "bt" into the console to get a traceback
  262. amami debacle: actually it installs 69 packages :-)
  263. debacle Sounds good! :)
  264. amami debacle: But it looks better now. Gajim 1.1.1 and omemo 2.6.25.
  265. debacle Should be a lot of python3 stuff, I hope.
  266. amami True.
  267. debacle Yes, this is the most current version. Should make you happy! :)
  268. amami And new emojis ;-)
  269. amami Yes it is fine now. Thank you!
  270. debacle Oh, but the colour emoji stuff doesn't work on stretch, unfortunately. GTK+ is too old.
  271. lovetox rom1dep, this is almost certainly no Gajim issue, maybe run Gajim gdb get a stacktrace so we can look into it and maybe find the reason
  272. debacle amami, colour emojis will work perfectly fine, when you upgrade to buster (Debian 10), which will be released in, hm, some months.
  273. amami Yeah, I can wait. Don't use emojis not that much.
  274. eduard I love ascii emojis
  275. eduard :p
  276. lovetox andrey.g, would be nice to get a log what stanzas lead to that error
  277. debacle eduard, same for me! ASCII art rulez :—) Or nowadays: Unicode art rulez.
  278. Chunk lovetox, there is. I have it installed okay now. For some reason my PubSub in discover services when I go to browse it, the application would disappear, like kill. It did that first on MATE DE and now the same on KDE. I've since disabled the component.
  279. redditor Test
  280. Chunk Test
  281. Chunk LoL 👽
  282. redditor I'm still learning hehe
  283. Chunk cool.
  284. Chunk echo "/me Test"
  285. redditor echo test
  286. Chunk I was showing you how to do what I did :D
  287. andrey.g lovetox, as I mentioned, for some tracebacks Gajim popups a window and does not print it to the console. IIRC after I exit Gajim these tracebacks will be printed but also without any context.
