Gajim - 2018-11-09

  1. lovetox mikaela do plugins appear there mikaela?
  2. lovetox plugins also dont show on flathub, so im not sure they appear in a flatpak search
  3. mikaela lovetox: if I do "flatpak search gajim", I see everything else except omemo, I think. If you would like to try another app with extensions, try "flatpak search hexchat" (author is involved with Flatpak). I didn't check gnome-software and cannot yet as I have a dog wanting out for a walk at the moment
  4. mikaela (+ I am currently KDE user and reported the bug on them not showing extensions at all)
  5. lovetox did you execute flatpak update or flatpak update --appstream
  6. lovetox mikaela?
  7. mikaela lovetox: both when Alex(?, sorry, I have horrible name memory) hinted it at the isrue tracker. Also in case I was unclear, I haven't attempted to flatpak search today yet
  8. lovetox then no idea
  9. lovetox maybe i have time later to ask in some flatpak related channel why the search is not updated
  10. mikaela I have been planning to do that too in case the issue doesn't resolve itself first as I care about both, Gajim's flatpak support abd OMEMO, and as I am somewhat advocating flatpak, it's probably reasonable to expect that I will be seeing similar issues in the future if it's not a Flatpak/Flathub issue
  11. lovetox that the plugins were not published at first was our fault, but i dont see how we can influence flatpaks search
  12. lovetox omemo is installable with theinstall command
  13. hannibal About extensions on flathub.org https://github.com/flathub/linux-store-frontend/issues/47
  14. mikaela Good news, omemo has appeared to flatpak search today

  22. neon Hi all people!
  23. neon Two questions for you, first one: is there a way to "compact" the tabs when having multiple tabs that exceed your screen (and having a sort of highlighting if one of the chat windows gets new content)?
  24. neon Second: according to this (https://xmpp.org/rfcs/rfc6121.html#sub-cancel-outbound) it's not possible to remove subscriptions if you don't have the corresponding JID in your roster, but I ask if it is anyway possible to request the server a list of JID who you are currently subscribed even if not in the roster
  25. neon I hope I made the requests properly understandable
  26. neon Thank you for your great work BTW, I am a fresh Gajim user (with latest 1.1.0 version)
  27. lovetox Look at the preferences, you can choose to move tabs to the left, then you have more space for more tabs, does require a restart though
  28. neon I'm going to have a look again cause I didn't notice this particular option before
  29. neon thank you lovetox
  30. lovetox Its called tabs position
  31. lovetox ah wait
  32. lovetox in 1.1 its in the advanced config editor
  33. lovetox preferences -> advanced -> editor
  34. lovetox filter for tabs
  35. lovetox or "tab"
  36. neon That's where I was heading, great to know anyway
  37. lovetox and for your second question
  38. lovetox JIDs that are subscribed to you are of course visible in your roster
  39. lovetox because you have to accept the subscription
  40. neon The problem originated because my previous client (Pidgin 2.13) didn't recall me to unsubscribe from a contact that I was going to remove from the roster. thus leaving the subscription enabled
  41. neon I managed to reproduce the issue by adding my JIDs to one istance of Gajim and another of Pidgin
  42. neon When deleting a contact in the roster, Gajim correctly and clearly reminds you that it is going to remove also the subscription, whilst Pidgin doesn't and apparently simply remove it without cancelling subscription first
  43. lovetox A subscription means you want status information from a contact, you cant remove a JID from your roster and still want status information, that contradicts each other
  44. neon When deleting a contact in the roster, Gajim correctly and clearly reminds you that it is going to remove also the subscription, while Pidgin doesn't and apparently simply remove it without cancelling subscription first
  45. lovetox if you remove a jid from your roster, it means you dont want status information anymore, and thus remove the subscription from you to that contact
  46. lovetox the question asked is: it does not mean only because you dont want status information anymore
  47. lovetox that you also dont want the contact getting informations from oyu
  48. lovetox so if you say: I dont want information anymore, but let my contact still get my information
  49. neon lovetox: in theory yes, but I was still able to see my status in Gajim after simply removing myself JID in Pidgin (without unsubscribing first)
  50. bot ik multimedia created an issue in _gajim_ < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/issues/9433 >: #9433: < crash >
  51. neon that's why I am asking,
  52. lovetox Gajim should not remove the contact from your roster, just displaying it in a special way that tells you This contact is an Observer of your status
  53. neon that's why I am asking
  54. lovetox i hope you tested this with 2 accoutns
  55. lovetox you refer to the jid as "myself"
  56. lovetox you can remove yourself from the roster
  57. lovetox *cant
  58. neon >‎[11:55:27] ‎lovetox‎: i hope you tested this with 2 accoutns Of course I did, two different accounts
  59. neon >‎[11:55:27] ‎lovetox‎: i hope you tested this with 2 accoutns Of course I did, two different accounts on different servers
  60. lovetox So you added a jid to gajim and to pidgin
  61. lovetox afterwards you deleted the jid from the roster in pidgin
  62. lovetox you expect the contact also getting removed from the gajim roster
  63. lovetox but it didnt
  64. neon Not really
  65. neon I was expecting to stop seeing contact updates (online status, avatar, etc.)
  66. bot Philipp Hörist closed an issue in _gajim_ < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/issues/9433 >: #9433: < crash >
  67. neon I know that rosters are indipendent, I am worring about the status subscription
  68. lovetox no the rosters are not independent
  69. lovetox the roster is a reflection of your server roster
  70. neon I mean are indipendent between different accounts
  71. neon I mean they are indipendent between different accounts
  72. lovetox ok, so let me recap
  73. lovetox you add a user@test.com in Gajim
  74. lovetox you use the account user@test.com in pidgin
  75. lovetox so 2 accoutns, one in pidgin, one in gajim
  76. lovetox and both have each other added as a contact
  77. lovetox with full subscription
  78. lovetox then you delete the contact in pidigin, and execpt that the pidgin account does not further share status information
  79. lovetox but you still see status information in Gajim
  80. neon yes
  81. lovetox Ok, i will have a look over the weekend
  82. lovetox we did some work on the subscription code so its not unlikely that we have a displaying bug here
  83. neon I tested also the opposite situation, and once removed in Gajim the Pidgin list wasn't showing anything apart "Not connected"
  84. lovetox it could be that Gajim doesnt register losing subscription and shows you a online status, when in reality it does not have that information anymore
  85. neon I am worried of the opposite situation, that Pidgin isn't removing subscription when you remove a contact from your roster when it should do so
  86. neon I tested also the opposite situation, and once removed in Gajim the Pidgin list wasn't showing anything apart "Not connected"
  87. lovetox neon, i would not worry
  88. neon (sorry for editing previous message, I reposted the old one after, I hope you understood)
  89. lovetox restart gajim
  90. lovetox see if it still shows the contact as online
  91. lovetox if not, its just a display bug in gajim
  92. neon Ok, I will test this again later and report any news/file a bug if necessary

  105. m4lvin neon: wonderful, thanks!
  106. lovetox neon, you cant sort tabs differently, what you can do is display tabs on the left side of the window which makes it possible to display 20+ tabs
  107. lovetox before it starts scrolling
  108. neon m4lvin: np, you're welcome lovetox: Yes, I saw this just now (I restarted couple of times to experiment a bit), thank you
  109. neon btw, after changing tab settings and restarting Gajim, I lost the history of all the chat groups I had joined before
  110. neon Is this normal?
  111. lovetox But yeah we have it on the roadmap more modern style of tabs, sorted by activity etc
  112. lovetox neon, they are not lost, Gajim has a history window
  113. lovetox CTRL + H
  114. lovetox for single chat you can choose to display the last X messages in the window
  115. neon Yes, but I mean not displayed anymore in the main tab
  116. lovetox look in advanced setting for restore_lines
  117. lovetox but for muc thats not possible
  118. neon >‎[12:32:32] ‎lovetox‎: but for muc thats not possible They are MUCs, so it's a design feature, I understand
  119. lovetox no there is no difference, we could load the last X messages from the DB also there
  120. lovetox but we didnt have that for now
  121. neon Well, it's ok for me, I initially thought it was a small "bug" due to changing the settings. Thanks for all the explanations lovetox, really kind.

  132. marmistrz lovetox, how is the review of my change going?
  133. Sotneo Download package 935,3 MB flatpak package of gajim. Never use flatpak, but it is huge :) Is it ok?
  134. MattJ Yeah, welcome to the world of bundled apps and containers :)
  135. Sotneo Dark theme does not work on flatpak for me. Can someone try it? Preference -> Style
  136. hannibal Sotneo: works for me
  137. hannibal Flatpak 1.0.4
  138. Sotneo I just download 1.1, from source it works
  139. userrrrrrr Please let us copy messages from log!
  140. userrrrrrr Secondly, I'd very much like to be able to search for messages in opened chats
  141. userrrrrrr (Doesn't work for me at all for some reason)
  142. Sotneo What log do you mean? I can copy from history and xml console.
  143. lovetox Sotneo, that amount is not ture
  144. lovetox Sotneo, that amount is not true
  145. lovetox after install search the app in the software app, and you will see it has about 20 mb
  146. lovetox but it seems to account for the full flatpak env in that install screen
  147. lovetox but then recognizes that the env is already installed
  148. lovetox marmistrz, havent looked at it yet
  149. Nothing4You i'm not sure whether it's caused by the latest osx update or a gajim-git update but it's occasionally freezing now
  150. Nothing4You in addition to the occasional crashes
  151. userrrrrrr Sotneo, can't copy from log for whatever reason
  152. userrrrrrr That is from history
  153. Sotneo userrrrrrr‎, Seems I get it. You can't copy from History Manager? It is not intended for this. Use Conversation history (ctrl+H)
  154. Sotneo Conversation history don't have global search, history manager is have, but not have copy. Looks like issue for me.
  155. r00tobo Hi guys.
  156. r00tobo I don't know what happened. but when I updated gajim through flatpak I had only the url image plugin no omemo no gpg.
  157. r00tobo do I need to install those plugins as a flatpak as well ?
  158. r00tobo like the url image plugin ?
  159. r00tobo ok found it. its in the flathub repo but I can't see it in flathub.org
  160. r00tobo gonna do a restart
  161. r00tobo Perfect. flatpak install flathub org.gajim.Gajim.Plugin.omemo solved it.
  162. lovetox Sotneo, Conversation history has global search just delete the jid at the top
  163. lovetox r00tobo, FYI, gpg plugin shows everything as unencrypted
  164. lovetox but it is not, its a display bug, i see that i fix it over the weekend
  165. r00tobo I see. that's why it's deleted from he flatpak version. gladly I didn't use it for a long time. I mainly use OMEMO now
  166. r00tobo the*
  167. Sotneo lovetox, when i detele, it is block search form
  168. lovetox hm no not for me
  169. Sotneo I don't like flatpak version :D I will try master
  170. Sotneo When I delete chat end press enter It is blocking search form. If enter not pressed it is searching only current conversation
  171. Sotneo git master
  172. lovetox hm yes true
  173. lovetox Go to View -> History
  174. lovetox ah no same issue
  175. lovetox hm yes we should have a way to search globally ithis is a bug, i think it was previously possible
  176. Sotneo History Manager have working global search :) But userrrrrrr‎ can't copy from it.
  177. lovetox yes its not intended for that
  178. Sotneo Why we have two windows for history? Is it kind of legacy?
  179. lovetox History Manager is a standalone application its just linked in Gajim
  180. lovetox it was prev thought that deleting logs while gajim is running can lead to errors
  181. lovetox so they made a standalone application for that
  182. lovetox but i agree its a bit unfortunate and we should think what we need from both and fuse them together
  183. profp30 Hello.
  184. profp30 I am running Gajim 1.1 beta (1.0.99) on Ubuntu. I am using OMEMO plugins. I have installed Gajim 1.1 as flatpak in parallel. When I launch the flatpak-gajim it asks me for my credentials. Question: where does Gajim1.1-beta from the std. ubuntu repos stores it's plugins_data? I want to copy my plugins in order to not lose my fingerprints.
  185. profp30 strange thing: my ainticipated folder "~/.local/share/gajim/plugins_data" is empty.
  186. lovetox ~/.local/share/gajim/yourjid_omemo.db
  187. lovetox you cant copy plugins
  188. lovetox https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/wikis/help/flathub
  189. lovetox you can copy the omemo db though
  190. lovetox after you install the plugin from flathub
  191. profp30 thank you very much lovetox
  192. mikaela ~/.var/app/ is where flatpak configs generally go to
  193. profp30 are there only three plugins available for the flatpak-gajim?
  194. profp30 or can I download the zips and install into the flatpak-gajim?
  195. lovetox you can try, but plugins that need dependencys will not work that way
  196. lovetox because dependencys have to be installed by flatpak
  197. profp30 i.c.
  198. profp30 thanks mikaela, this helps
  199. lovetox actually you dont ahve to move omemo.db
  200. lovetox you just have to install the plugin and start
  201. lovetox it will use the same userdata folder
  202. lovetox as your other gajim installations
  203. profp30 aaah, my issue is, I thought I need to this manually.
  204. profp30 it was not clear to me I have to install the flatpak-omemo for the flatpak-gajim.
  205. profp30 thanks for your support!
  206. profp30 lovetox, is the flatpak-gajim as well as the flatpak-plugins going to be updated on a regulary basis?
  207. lovetox yes
  208. profp30 merci bien
  209. lovetox if you want to see more plugins on flathub drop us a message which ones
  210. profp30 lovetox, are there also plans to make gajim availabe via snaps?
  211. profp30 just being curious
  212. Nothing4You i just don't get why people use flatpak
  213. lovetox profp30, if there is someone who maintains the package there, we have nothing against it
  214. profp30 Nothing4You, the latest version of gajim is available on flatpak. not in the ubuntu repos.
  215. Nothing4You http://flatkill.org/
  216. lovetox profp30, it is of course also available on ubuntu, but in backports repo
  217. lovetox of course it cannot be in debian stable
  218. Nothing4You lovetox, there evn is a gajim ubuntu repo
  219. Nothing4You https://gajim.org/downloads.php?lang=en#ubuntu
  220. Nothing4You oh i misread
  221. Nothing4You that's for daily builds from git
  222. Nothing4You or does it also contain a stable one?
  223. r00tobo Nothing4You, if I were going to use Debian I would go with the backprots packages to get the latest. but I'm using Solus and it doesn't have all the bits.
  224. lovetox yes it contains also stable
  225. r00tobo so I had to use flatpak to get things running easily.
  226. Nothing4You ftp://ftp.gajim.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-amd64/ the gajim repo does package the latest gajim in its own deb
  227. profp30 personally, i am only interested in the latest stable.
  228. Nothing4You so you can just include the gajim repo and not use something like flatpak
  229. Nothing4You it does contain latest stable
  230. r00tobo I'm using a non-deb distro.
  231. Nothing4You you just said you use ubuntu
  232. r00tobo me?
  233. lovetox different user
  234. r00tobo you mean profp30
  235. Nothing4You oops
  236. Nothing4You right
  237. Nothing4You lol
  238. r00tobo 😂
  239. Nothing4You for profp30 it would be a good solution tho
  240. r00tobo he can actually use the backports. at least on Debian you get the latest gajim's bits.
  241. Nothing4You so are you using flatpak on solus?
  242. profp30 So what would be the best way for me (Ubuntu 18.10) to always get the latest offical stable gajim fast?
  243. Nothing4You considering that's what's written on the gajim site i'd go with the gajim repo https://gajim.org/downloads.php?lang=en#ubuntu
  244. profp30 ok, thanks.
  245. profp30 nah, that's nightlies.
  246. Nothing4You no
  247. Nothing4You it also contains the regular gajim package
  248. Nothing4You which is latest stable
  249. lovetox stop please
  250. lovetox profp30, google how to add the debian backports repo
  251. lovetox and install gajim from there
  252. Nothing4You why use the debian backports repo on ubuntu rather than the gajim repo?
  253. profp30 Ok, will make it so, thanks.
  254. Nothing4You lovetox?
  255. lovetox because debian maintainers look that everything works before they publish a release in a repo
  256. lovetox we dont.
  257. Nothing4You i see
  258. lovetox its mostly for nightlys
  259. lovetox but if you run the deb script for nightlys, why not run it also for stable..
  260. Nothing4You why not add instructions to the install page for that?
  261. lovetox but if a maintainer of your distro packages the application its better to take that, then ours
  262. Nothing4You that's assuming it gets updates
  263. lovetox Nothing4You, it says nothing about installing stable on the install page?
  264. Nothing4You current instructions on the install page don't say anything about backports for example
  265. lovetox from our repos
  266. Nothing4You no it doesn't
  267. lovetox first line is "sudo apt-get install gajim
  268. Nothing4You yes
  269. bot André pushed 2 commits to branch _refs/heads/master_ of _gajim_ < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim >: *09cded2f* < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/commit/09cded2ff367a191962a268681ec7823a1d82723 > Flatpak: update dependencies and use pip to install modules *ac2a75db* < https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/commit/ac2a75db489d0812a1dbf0dffd4b3359bd31f93f > Flatpak: use X11 access only if a X11 session is running Requires flatpak 1.0 or newer
  270. lovetox which means install it from debian repos
  271. Nothing4You on a debian stable that means ancient
  272. Nothing4You so you probably want backports
  273. Nothing4You why not add a hint to backports there?`
  274. lovetox im not sure i should guess what users want, if a user uses a distributions stable repos i guess he wants the software the stable repo maintainer deems stable
  275. lovetox not what i think is stable on his system
  276. lovetox but yes i agree we could add a line about backports
  277. Nothing4You something like > you can get the latest stable version from backports in case the stable repo is outdated
  278. lovetox but in general im not here to workaround "stable" distribution and there distribution philosophys
  279. Nothing4You with a link to the backports setup guide
  280. lovetox yes seems sensible
