Gajim - 2017-09-15

  1. stp When clicking a user's name to speak to that user publicly, why does Gajim put a comma instead of a colon behind the user name?
  2. concerto stp, that makes you the third person to wonder about that ;)
  3. Asterix stp: there is an advanced option for that
  4. pep. stp: why not?
  5. concerto pep., because "," is used (and quite commonly at that) to organize sentences and delimit lists of things, and it therefore has scope for confusion ("Alice, Bob and I will go."). It also breaks common user expectations (nearly every client I've seen uses ":").
  6. concerto pep., because "," is used (and quite commonly at that) to organize sentences and delimit lists of things, and it therefore has scope for confusion ("Alice, Bob and I will go." - if sent from Gajim, are there three or two people going? ;) ). It also breaks common user expectations (nearly every client I've seen uses ":").
  7. uc : is from irc usage but it's still confusing when you want to quote someone > concerto: uc: also conversation overview in some clients gets confusing if you are not familiar with irc..
  8. concerto uc, I don't understand - please explain both these cases of confusion.
  9. mimi89999 concerto: uc: it's still confusing when you want to quote someone
  10. mimi89999 concerto: Copy pasting the message from the nick...
  11. concerto Ah, I see. Don't we use the quote feature (in conjunction with multi-line messages) in Jabber land, for that?
  12. concerto (...which usually excludes the quoted person's nick; atleast, that's how I've used it...never seen much quoting of either sort happen, to be honest.)
  13. pep. concerto: I say it's all a matter of context
  14. pep. In your example it's pretty obvious you're talking to Alice if she's in the room
  15. pep. IM is not literature
  16. concerto pep., if there are more than 4 people (Alice, Bob, me and others), it isn't clear if I'm sending it to Alice, or generally declaring to the others.
  17. concerto it's communication ;)
  18. concerto it's communication ^^
  19. pep. Yeah, not much of a problem to me, it's just bikeshedding
  20. pep. You can change that character in gajim already anyway
  21. concerto I'd just like ":" to be the default.
  22. stp Yep, IMO : should be the default.
  23. stp pep.: Can you tell me where, please?
  24. concerto wat. Someone sent me a whisper in an OMEMO MUC, and I get "I sent you an OMEMO encrypted message but your client doesn’t seem to support that. Find more information on https://conversations.im/omemo" o_o'
  25. concerto (it was received correctly in Conversations)
  26. concerto (I *do* have OMEMO installed and set up, and I do trust the FP of the sender.)
  27. stp concerto: old OMEMO-Plugin or Gajim in general?
  28. pep. stp, I don't know where, Asterix said it was available as an advanced option
  29. stp pep.: Ok, I'll have a look later. Thx!
  30. concerto oh and gajim-default-nightly on Debian Stretch.

  34. 7usr7local int, lovetox: Regarding gajim w/ omemo on OS X with macports: I just updated everything and omemo works. There is just not QR Code displayed, caused by a problem with python-qrcode, which is probaly due to an packaging error with macports. (Error is ".../site-packages/google': missing __init__.py" in case somebody here is familiar with macports)
  35. int 7usr7local: i ve never tried die QR Code with gajim but i gonna check this..
  36. 7usr7local int: Thnx.
  37. stp concerto: Does your Gajim list your Conversations' fingerprint?
  38. lovetox 7usr7local, again try installing it with pip
  39. lovetox you can also try to add a __init__.py file into the google folder
  40. lovetox the file has to be empty
  41. lovetox concerto, i have to check if gajim supports encrypted whisper messages
  42. lovetox from my feeling it should but could be bugged
  43. 7usr7local lovetox: An empty __init__.py doesn't help. Of course the "missing" error went away, but it still says "gajim.plugin_system.omemo python-qrcode or dependencies of it are not available". I'll try the pip approach, if time permitts. (Unfortunately, i have to deactivate the modules installed by macports, because otherwise pip claims there ist "nothing to do") The good news ist still, that up to displaying the QR code, gajim provided by macports "just works" *with* omemo on OS X.
  44. lovetox hm what package for qrcode did you install via macports?
  45. lovetox https://pypi.python.org/pypi/qrcode
  46. lovetox this is what we use
  47. Asterix Qrcode is not required. An error is printed, but that's not a problem
  48. 7usr7local As long as you don't want to see a QR code ;-) As I said twice: gajim w/ omemo is working in gajim from macports.
  49. 7usr7local lovetox: The package, that is missing the __init__.py is protobuf. (py-protobuf3 in macports)
  50. lovetox yeah it should have no influence on the qr problem
  51. 7usr7local lovetox: Oh.
  52. lovetox protobuf is needed for omemo, not showing the qrcode, the qrcode is a package that is totally independent
  53. lovetox i dont know why this error with protobuf happens, but it still works
  54. lovetox but its not limited to mac
  55. 7usr7local lovetox: I got it. Thank you.
  56. 7usr7local While googling for It I found something about google switching to namespaces for their python modules. Does that make sense to you?
  57. lovetox yeah they did something with the package, but i dont know what i should do differently, i have to import the package, and on import this is printed
  58. lovetox ah i see, i think i import it in the wrong way
  59. 7usr7local lovetox: It works :-) gajim -v did the trick. The port "py-pip" was missing.
  60. lovetox great
  61. 7usr7local Anybody interessted in a list of macport ports needed to get omemo for gajim running?
  62. lovetox yeah write it down i add it to the mac osx wiki page
  63. 7usr7local lovetox: I'll do.
