  12. 007 what is new in it ?
  13. Link Mauve No, the real 0.16.1, and news are at https://gajim.org/
  14. Link Mauve rc means release candidate, that is the version right before a release.
  15. 007 aha

  26. a007 i cant see any post here :s let me re enter
  27. Asterix Do you have it in c:\program files\Gajim ?
  28. 007 i dono
  29. 007 i am using ubuntu14.04
  30. Asterix ha, so just type "whereis gajim"

  36. 007 how to remove it completly ?
  37. 007 i want to install 0.16.1
  38. 007 even I've installed it but when em seeing Help>About
  39. 007 there is Gajim 0.16-rc2
  40. 007 and when searching on apps there it shows 0.15.4
  41. Asterix you probably installed it from sources.
  42. Asterix if you still have the folder from where you installed it, just "sudo make uninstall" from it
  43. 007 I've installed in using terminal
  44. 007 and i dono where it was installed
  45. Asterix you can specify where you want to install when doing configure: ./configuer --prefix=/usr for example by default it's /usr/local
  46. 007 Owner
  47. 007 i didnt
  48. 007 just ./configure
  49. Asterix so it's in /usr/local. Now just sudo make uninstall and it will be removed
  50. 007 let me see
  51. 007 sudo make uninstall sudo make uninstall gajim ?
  52. Asterix no
  53. 007 then
  54. 007 sudo make uninstall
  55. Asterix but you have to be in gajim folder (the folder from where you launched configure last time
  56. 007 on desktop
  57. 007 so that setup must be present while em uninstalling ?
  58. Asterix when you installed Gajim, you downloaded a tarball, uncompressed it, right?
  59. 007 yeah
  60. 007 exactly
  61. 007 what I do now ?
  62. 007 just I want to remove it all old versions,
  63. Asterix you go in that folder
  64. Asterix (if you still have it
  65. 007 yes i have
  66. Asterix you go in it from console
  67. 007 ok
  68. Asterix then "sudo make uninstall"
  69. 007 a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~/Desktop/gajim-0.16-rc2$
  70. 007 its my location now
  71. 007 and next is ./configiure
  72. 007 do I configure again and make ?
  73. Asterix no need to configure again
  74. Asterix just sudo make uninstall
  75. 007 ok :-$$
  76. 007 a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~/Desktop$ cd gajim-0.16-rc2/ a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~/Desktop/gajim-0.16-rc2$ sudo make uninstall [sudo] password for a007: make: *** No rule to make target `uninstall'. 77. 007 not done
  78. Asterix then reconfigure

  86. a007 but how i am still here ? if its uninstalled ?
  87. a007 #:-S
  88. Asterix it's still loaded im mem
  89. a007 oww
  90. Asterix it's still loaded in mem
  91. a007 let me logout and restart my Lappy again, hope its completly uninstalled
  92. a007 BRB
  93. SamWhited Are the Ubuntu repos so out of date that they're now advocating installing things from source? I thought the point of Ubuntu was to be "Linux for people who don't know what Linux is" (I also always thought it did a terrible job at it… so maybe I've just got the wrong impression)
  94. Asterix yes ubuntu devs didn't updated Gajim to 0.16 in their repos ...

  96. SamWhited Typical…
  97. Link Mauve 0.16 is in the one going to be released in April.
  98. Link Mauve Maybe now would be the time to tell them to upgrade.
  99. SamWhited I really dislike Ubuntu... I love the idea, but the implementation is so poor. I stuck my family on it and all I got was "It's slower than Windows, complains about mysterious 'problems' constantly, and videos online don't work; we don't like this Linux thing". It's bad marketing.
  100. SamWhited Sorry, averting the rant before I get started...
  101. SamWhited Done now
  102. 007 a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$ gajim Gajim needs python-nbxmpp >= 0.5.2 to run. Quiting... a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$
  103. 007 now i am on Windows7
  104. 007 gajim is not running on ubuntu :D :(
  105. 007 older version uninstalled
  106. 007 but latest version is not running
  107. 007 #SamWwhite @ which Linux is good ?
  108. Asterix I think message is clear, you need python-nbxmpp 0.5.2
  109. Asterix get it there: ftp://ftp.gajim.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-all/
  110. 007 I,ve installed
  111. Asterix you've installed it with python3 and gajim runs with python2 ?
  112. Asterix run python2 setup.py install
  113. 007 ftp://ftp.gajim.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-amd64/
  114. Asterix yes it's the same one, it's ok
  115. 007 i have that setup file
  116. 007 it was next to gajim setup
  117. Asterix ha you installed from debian package? so it should be ok
  118. Asterix could you open a python console?
  119. Asterix type python
  120. Asterix and tell me what you see
  121. 007 i am using windows now :( i have to logout and login from ubuntu
  122. 007 File:gajim_0.16.1-1_all.deb 2943 KB 28/02/2015 9:40:00 File:python-nbxmpp_0.5.2-1_all.deb 65 KB 28/02/2015 9:40:00
  123. 007 i have installed this 2 files
  124. 007 come to my system ? i am sharing
  125. Asterix then all should be ok :/ could you login to ubuntu and use another xmpp client to come here so we can debug that?
  126. 007 pidgin
  127. 007 i have that
  128. 007 let me see
  129. 007 BRB
  130. SamWhited 007: whichever one you like best; I don't mean to dissuade you. I just don't like it personally

  137. SamWhited We saw; be patient :) not everyone can be here 24/7; Asterix may have stepped away from the keyboard for a moment.
  138. 007 :'-(
  139. 007 SamWhile what is your opinion about Kali Linux ?
  140. 007 whited*
  141. SamWhited 007: Never heard of it
  142. 007 aww
  143. 007 google it
  144. SamWhited wilco
  145. 007 it has Backtrack
  146. SamWhited Ubuntu is probably fine for your purposes though; I was just complaining about how packages are always out of date :)
  147. 007 yeah, i am just beginner
  148. 007 I love Gajim because of so many functions ie. XML console, user activity in rooms and more
  149. SamWhited oh, Kali is that Debian version for pen testing; someone in the office was talking about that the other day I think. Nifty.
  150. SamWhited 007: Re your Gajim problem, did you try Asterix's suggestion of updating nbxmpp to 0.5.2?
  151. 007 yes
  152. 007 I have it in my Lappy
  153. 007 Python 2.7.6 (default, Mar 22 2014, 22:59:56) [GCC 4.8.2] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>>
  154. SamWhited Not your python version; nbxmpp.

  156. 007 when I'm trying to run gajim from terminal
  157. 007 I am getting this message
  158. 007 a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$ gajim Gajim needs python-nbxmpp >= 0.5.2 to run. Quiting... a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$
  159. 007 and I've installed it python-nbxmpp_0.5.2-1_all.deb <ftp://ftp.gajim.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-amd64/python-nbxmpp_0.5.2-1_all.deb> 65 KB
  160. SamWhited Ah, I see (sorry if I'm making you repeat yourself, my history got clobbered a minute ago)
  161. 007 its ok
  162. 007 waiting
  163. SamWhited I've got nothing. I suppose I could go try installing it on my debian box and see if I run into the same problem, but I can't do that right this moment (and I couldn't really launch it to see if it has the same problem anyways as it's a headless box with no DE installed)
  164. 007 same error ???
  165. 007 a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$ gajim Gajim needs python-nbxmpp >= 0.5.2 to run. Quiting... a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$
  166. 007 ohh sorry
  167. 007 .a.
  168. SamWhited Sorry, I know you said a minute ago, but where was the tarball you installed from (and is there a reason you didn't just install the .deb file like you did with nbxmpp?)
  169. SamWhited err, nevermind, I'll just go pull it off of ftp.
  170. 007 i just want anyone here to fix my gajim
  171. 007 come to my Lappy if you can fix it ?
  172. SamWhited heh, can't install on my debian box because the build tools are too old... *sigh* Debian.
  173. 007 :D aww
  174. 007 redhat linux is better i think
  175. 007 kali Linux good for backtracking
  176. SamWhited Heh, I hate RedHat too, but it's all up to personal preference. "Better" is hard to quanitify.
  177. 007 What is good in debian ?
  178. dicson 007, open terminal
  179. 007 ok
  180. dicson run python
  181. 007 then
  182. 007 how ?
  183. dicson import nbxmpp
  184. 007 command
  185. SamWhited "python"...
  186. 007 ok
  187. dicson >>> import nbxmpp

  192. 007 >>> nbxmpp_0.5.2-1_all.deb
  193. 007 running this ?
  194. 007 okk
  195. 007 ?
  196. SamWhited no, just type what he told you to type.
  197. SamWhited nbxmpp.__version__
  198. dicson http://dicson.no-ip.info/apache2-default/screenshots/2015-03-01_18:55:16.png
  199. 007 ok
  200. 007 >>> import nbxmpp >>> nbxmpp._version_ Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute '_version_' >>>
  201. SamWhited two underscores around each side of "version" :)
  202. 007 ok
  203. SamWhited (hard to see, I know... it's a weird Python convention)
  204. 007 AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute '_version_' >>> nbxmpp.__version__ '0.5' >>>
  205. dicson copy and paste...
  206. dicson vrong wersion installed
  207. 007 aww
  208. 007 how to fix it
  209. SamWhited Sounds like the package you downloaded didn't get installed after all
  210. Asterix how did you installed the 0.5.2 version?
  211. 007 from your site
  212. 007 ftp://ftp.gajim.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-amd
  213. 007 python-nbxmpp_0.5.2-1_all.deb <ftp://ftp.gajim.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-amd64/python-nbxmpp_0.5.2-1_all.deb> 65 KB
  214. SamWhited But what did you run to actually install it?
  215. dicson Always install the software from the package!
  216. Asterix once you got the file, how did you install it?
  217. 007 i just double clicked on python-nbxmpp_0.5.2-1_all.deb <ftp://ftp.gajim.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-amd64/python-nbxmpp_0.5.2-1_all.deb>
  218. 007 and its start installing
  219. Asterix maybe you also installed a previous version from a tarball?
  220. 007 no
  221. 007 yes
  222. 007 :D :(
  223. 007 but i dont remember where is it
  224. dicson just search
  225. SamWhited heh, this is why installing from source isn't a good idea unless you know what you're doing (not faulting you; just saying... I completely understand where you're coming from, the repos being out of date is incredibly annoying sometimes)
  226. 007 sam :D :(
  227. Asterix do you have a /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nbxmpp folder?
  228. 007 i think yes
  229. 007 but how to find it ?
  230. dicson nautilus?
  231. Asterix then delete it: rm -r /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nbxmpp*
  232. 007 a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$ whereis python python: /usr/bin/python3.4 /usr/bin/python3.4m /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/python2.7 /etc/python3.4 /etc/python /etc/python2.7 /usr/lib/python3.4 /usr/lib/python2.7 /usr/bin/X11/python3.4 /usr/bin/X11/python3.4m /usr/bin/X11/python /usr/bin/X11/python2.7 /usr/local/lib/python3.4 /usr/local/lib/python2.7 /usr/include/python2.7 /usr/share/python /usr/share/man/man1/python.1.gz a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$
  233. Asterix run the rm command I just gave you
  234. 007 ok
  235. 007 a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$ rm -r /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nbxmpp* rm: descend into write-protected directory ‘/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nbxmpp’?
  236. dicson SamWhited, a good detective story :-)
  237. Asterix with sudo at the begining
  238. 007 ok
  239. SamWhited dicson: Indeed; good call double checking the version.
  240. 007 a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$ sudo rm -r /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nbxmpp* [sudo] password for a007: a007@a007-Satellite-C850:~$
  241. 007 nothing
  242. SamWhited Good :)
  243. Asterix ok nice
  244. Asterix now re-open a new python console
  245. Asterix import nbxmpp
  246. Asterix nbxmpp.__version__
  247. 007 >>> import nbxmpp >>> nbxmpp.__version__ '0.5.2' >>>
  248. dicson yeah!!
  249. Asterix you should be able to run gajim now
  250. 007 let me see
  251. 007 Hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :D
  252. 007 Love you Guys :p
  253. dicson 007, Always install the software from the package!
  254. 007 still one problem :( :D no XML console on Ubuntu
  255. dicson global menu problem?
  256. 007 come to my lappy
  257. 007 I've reported it on site too
  258. 007 Owner know about it
  259. 007 Since I've updated my Ubuntu10.0 to 14.04 , XML console is disabed
  260. dicson http://askubuntu.com/questions/373527/gajim-cant-access-submenus-in-top-menu-bar ??
  261. SamWhited We should probably just turn that off in the startup script if it's not in there already
  262. 007 Just "Action" menu is not working
  263. 007 dicson: http://askubuntu.com/questions/373527/gajim-cant-access-submenus-in-top-menu-bar ?? yeah Exactly

  268. dicson sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/gajim.desktop

  271. 007 popup open
  272. dicson SamWhited, thanks! I do not know english

  333. SamWhited I don't think it will matter (0 or no)
  334. 007 you know well
  335. SamWhited Actually, ignore me. I don't know why I'm pipping up; I know nothing about Ubuntu, or what weird hackery it might be doing.
  336. dicson 007, try remove 0///
  337. SamWhited It _shouldn't_ matter, but this is Ubuntu, so it probably does :)
  338. 007 Sam :D :(
  339. 007 ok
  340. dicson need 1 or nothihk
  341. 007 Exec=env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY gajim

  357. 007 right ?
  358. dicson Exec=env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= gajim => Exec=gajim

  363. 007 still no staat with logo
  364. dicson =-O
  365. 007 start*
  366. 007 just with terminal
  367. SamWhited what happens if you run "which gajim" in a terminal?
  368. SamWhited (although if it works when you just run "gajim" that's not the problem; unless you're doing "./gajim" from the install dir or something)
  369. 007 its only working with terminal using "Exec=env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 gajim"
  370. SamWhited The "Exec=env" isn't doing anything on the terminal. You can leave it off.
  371. SamWhited It's setting a variable "Exec" to the value "env"... which won't hurt, but won't help either.
  372. SamWhited Whereas in the desktop file, it's telling Ubuntu "when they double click, run the "Exec=" line, so Ubuntu runs "env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 gajim"
  373. 007 aha
  374. dicson but why double click not work?
  375. 007 but its not working while i click on gajim logo
  376. SamWhited yah, I dunno, works fine for me if I run it via env and add some environment variables, but I'm not on Ubuntu, so I dunno.
  377. SamWhited Try running: "env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 gajim" fromt he terminal and see if that gives you an error for some reason? (doubt it will, but you never know; it could provide more info... otherwise maybe see if Ubuntu logs launcher failures somewhere so we can get more info to debug?)

  463. 007 oww
  464. 007 its happening with Ubuntu 14.04
  465. 007 huhh
  466. 007 Ok Buddy cya
  467. 007 have nice time
  468. Link Mauve Asterix, I think you should release a 0.16.1.1 with that fix from yesterday, setting UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 in the launch.sh script.
  469. Link Mauve I remember it being a serious issue on Ubuntu, but totally forgot about it until yesterday. :x
  470. Link Mauve Also there is no systray as found on older desktop environments, I’m not sure how Gajim behaves when it tries to minimize there.
  471. Asterix Yep why not ... but it takes me time to do a release. Ok I have scripts to build things, but then I do a few tests, upload, announce, update website, translate it, ...
  472. Asterix no enough time this evening. My SAM3 µC waits for me to do quadrature decoding :)
  473. Asterix for systray, Gajim is supposed to detect if there is a systray or not, and not minimize if there is not
  474. Asterix but I haven't checked by disabling mine
  475. Link Mauve Ok.
  476. Link Mauve Last time I tried on loliwm I couldn’t find how to bring Gajim back. ^^'
  477. Asterix gajim-remote
  478. Link Mauve Yeah, I found it after a while.
  479. Asterix but if you were able to minimize it without systray, that's a bad news :/
  480. Link Mauve How do you do systray discovering? You list the X11 windows to search for the Xembed one?
  481. Asterix ok it seems (reading the code) that it's only an ACE option (trayicon)
  482. Natureshadow Huh
  483. Natureshadow Gajim lost my contact list for one of my accounts :o
  484. Natureshadow I see the presence of two users that I received messages from when starting Gajim, but it says they are not on my roster
  485. Natureshadow I see my full roster on another device, though
  486. Natureshadow reconnecting does not help…
  487. Link Mauve Natureshadow, open the XML console, reconnect, and look for the stanza containing your roster.
  488. Asterix could you show me the XML when you connect (after authentication)
  489. Asterix (maybe a roster versionning issue)
  490. Link Mauve Search for stanzas containing jabber:iq:roster actually.
  491. Natureshadow ok
  492. Natureshadow will this chatroom automatically redirect long posts to the pastebin?
  493. Natureshadow Link Mauve, Asterix, https://paste.gajim.org/view/4fcba825
  494. Natureshadow I get all the presence stanzas, vcards, and PEP messages after that
  495. Link Mauve Natureshadow, yup, it will.
  496. Asterix Natureshadow: ok, try to delete the value of roster_version for your account in ACE
  497. Asterix and reconnect (no need to restart Gajim completely)
  498. Natureshadow ok, brb
  499. Natureshadow Hah
  500. Natureshadow Thanks, Asterix, that fixed it
  501. Natureshadow Does that indicate some inconsistency on the server side in any way?
  502. Link Mauve No, only on the client side.
  503. Natureshadow ok
  504. Natureshadow thanks, then
